Vegas Hotels

Looks like I'll be going to Vegas at the end of November. We're looking at the Ar!a, Ceasars and MGM. Which would be best?

Seven nights, and ideally we'd want a double twin with a sofa bed as well as there'll be three of us. However, a twin and a second room would suffice.

http://www.theplatinumhotel.com/ we found booking.com cheapest. I wouldn't stay at Ceasars or MGM.

Ar1a will be nice, but significantly more expensive

I probably wouldn't stay in any of those, **** is a pig to get in and out of, Caesars is an overpriced mess of a place and MGM is not a great location

I just got back, i actually really liked the Luxor, not much of a view from my window (i was level with the sphinx backside lol). Location wise, i really liked being on the end, had a couple of places attached, plenty places to drink and eat reasonably priced etc. Hotel also cost me £152 for 4 nights, i had 2 large double beds in my room.

I didn't shoot in the end but i did pick up a couple of leathermans from the Bass Pro shop in silverton, and god dang Rio was a mission and a half to walk.

Ok so I'm heading across a week on Sunday for 4 nights in MGM and 10 nights in Venetian.

I'm going to try the $20 trick and see what joys that can bring. Has anyone got any other tips?

Also what are the best poker games to play in? I'm a fairly capable player (although a bit rusty). Ideally I'd like some SnG tournaments but if cash games are were the money is at I'm keen for that. Also what sorta times are the games on (I'm assuming all hours). Reason I ask is I'm going with the missus and am thinking that the poker is going to have to be fit in to her sleeping patterns.

Finally, are you likely to get any "comps" playing in certain casinos, or are you likely to need to gamble big money to get anything?

Cheers, reading this thread has been invaluable.

To get anything decent big money is needed really.

For example you are looking at $100s per hand for hour and hours (blackjack) unless you are just looking for a buffet or a "free" drink.

My tip never play a game for drinks unless that's you type of thing.

There are lots of bars that do $1 - $2 drinks, even a few on the strip and you don't need to travel far outside to find loads.

So why waste $10 to get 1 drink when you can go in a bar sit and relax and get it for 1/5 of the price of the so called "free" drink. And then you would have to tip the person who brings it you a couple of dollars as well.

I suppose it's not as bad if you are drinking cocktails or something but beers not a chance.

SNGs are pretty non existent, best tourneys are ****, Venetian, Bellagio, anything under $100 will be a crapshoot, most big tourneys run twice a day at about 1pm and 7pm

$1/2 games are everywhere (£1/3 in a few places) juicy cash games full of fish include PH, MGM, Flamingo, the game at the Venetian is quite tough

for you u/g at Venetian you may want to make it $50 seeing as it's for 10 nights

you may get $1 an hour comp playing cash games, best comps will come from the caesers properties but very little for poker players

I just got back last Monday from two weeks over there. The weather was really humid this time so hopefully it will have cleared up for you. I got caught in a mini tornado!!! Bins, pool beds, debris all flying through the air!! We had to keep away from the windows when we got back in to the casino as they were scared something was going to crash through.

In terms of the $20 trick, it probably wont work at the weekend. We told every check in agent it was our wedding anniversary (it genuinely was!) and got upgraded on every room apart from one. The one we didn't, they offered us a paid upgrade which we took as it was a bargain. Worth a try though.

I am going to do a full 'trip report' in the La Cuisine forum as we ate some amazing meals this time, I can recommend a ton of restaurants if you like? Just let me know what type of food is your thing. Our standout meals were at Botero, Blue Ribbon Sushi and Bacchanal Buffet.

In terms of 'things to do' if you are wanting to go to a gun range, I cannot recommend American Shooters enough; way better than the others I have visited and better value. You get a box of ammo, the weapon of your choice and a little instruction on how to shoot. In the others you just get one or two clips and a loaded weapon handed to you.

Since you are there for two weeks, hire a car. Drive to the Hoover dam and all the outlet malls. Could even check out the Grand Canyon if you fancied a long road trip.

Hope this helps, enjoy and be lucky!

Great stuff that cheers mate. I'll look out for your thread in La Cuisine. Like most food, leaning towards Grill/Italian if I was pushed for a favourite type.

Will have a look at American Shooters, I'm keen to fire some weapons but not sure the budget will stretch. Got a trip to Hoover, Grand Canyon and L.A sorted too cheers mate.

That's the good thing about American Shooters. It's off strip but you can just go in, pay $15 for your range fee then pick a weapon and ammo. The others all want you to spend big on a 3-4 weapon package. That said, I still rented 3 guns :) It's off strip so you need a car.

In terms of food:

Good and Cheap:
Outback- Steaks and grills
Denny's- Breakfasts
Peppermill Lounge- Breakfast
Rollin' Smoke BBQ- BBQ
Memphis Championship BBQ-BBQ
Hot and Juicy Crawfish- Insane bags of prawns!
In and Out Burger- Best fast food burgers

Mid Range
Holsteins- Burgers, best burger in Vegas is the Gold Standard burger. Amazing thing!
Cheesecake Factory- Everything in the world pretty much, and epic cakes
Max Brenner- Chocolate themed stuff!
Strip Burger- Burgers
Mon Ami Gabi- French, but it's all about the view
Bacchanal Buffet- Best buffet in Vegas right now, all types of cuisine

Higher End
Society at Encore- Good american food, check out the steaks, good value for good cuts.
Botero- Best meal I have ever had in Vegas, poolside setting at Encore with amazing steaks and seafood
Fleur- Informal but nicely prepared dishes, good choice
Blue Ribbon Sushi- Sushi, but check out their fried chicken with honey wasabi dip!

Do not waste your time and money at Gordon Ramsey in Paris. We walked out after being ignored at our table, it's just a ridiculous place with terrible service and overpriced food.

/edit

Just a thought- LA trip, are you driving there and back in a day? It's 4-4.5 hours each way and do not do it on a Friday or Sunday/Monday as the traffic is a nightmare.

Several of the above we really like too

Holsteins, Stripburger, Fleur is good with the restaurant.com voucher

Hot and juicy Crawfish...YES YES YES

I had some prawns at a BBQ last night. The size of them here compared to the USA just saddens me.

Forgot to put American Fish on that list. Good happy hour dishes there, quite small but enough to put you on.

Hash House a Go Go was fun too but just ridiculously wasteful. Lobster ME in Miracle Mile shops for good lobster rolls

I've been strongly considering going to Vegas next year. Never been to America before and always thought about it, so I'm thinking its time to make it happen. Probably would want to go for 10 days or make a fortnight.

What hotel would you recommend for a first timer? Bear in mind:

1. I want something on the strip
2. I want something thats modern and fairly luxurious, but not ridiculously so. Anything more than $200 a night would be pushing my budget.
3. I dont drive, so would be relying either on public transport or waking, so something in the middle of the strip would probably be handier than something at either end, but I'd consider somewhere at the end if the hotel was good enough to justify the extra travel time up/down the strip.
4. I looooooove food, so a hotel with good resteraunts would be a plus.
