Victorian renovation build log

kitchen in its raw state.

Was going to get one from DIY kitchens but then found an awesome joiner who worked out the same price (as long as I do a lot of painting!)

painted the walls

lots of undercoating to do on the units

fitted new lights (not to everyone's taste I'm sure but the rest of the kitchen will be quite plain)

can see the new cooker in the background too

Easier yes

Cheaper no - worked out the same price as the solid wood door DIY kitchen

They are solid wood (except the moisture proof MDF panel to stop warping) the feel of them is not reproducible in a off the shelf kichen
They weigh an absolute ton and filled an entire 7m van!

They are also made to measure and my design, I wanted an in frame look

Painting is being done with farrow and ball egg shell
- 1x coat of undercoat
- 2x coat of topcoat

Better half chose the colours - Hague Blue and Pavillion Grey

That is the utility run with faux cupboards for washer + dryer
The sink I found in the garden and is probably the original from 1869!

Gap looks worse from that angle, small gap is needed as that's the dishwasher door and when open it goes behind he plinth a little

Worktops arrive today!

well that was a nightmare!!!

granite fitters came around and fitted most of the granite.

refused to do the last bit as the wall wasn't battened - they implied that would do it

but the real kick in the teeth was they unplumbed both sets of kitchen taps, unplumbed the washing machine, unplumbed the dishwasher and actually removed by double belfast sink! They left it on the floor and left the heavy double waste resting on the dishwasher water feed causing it to leak!!!!

I got hope from work to find them leaving... their response was "we aren't plumbers"

so I have no running water in the kitchen, no dishwasher, no washing machine and an expensive double sink left on my expensive floor!

absolutely fuming!
and now have to sort it out at my expense :(:(:(

What would you guys do???

I've sent an angry email to them and they tried to call but I actually work and take pride in my job so couldn't answer/ring back

I've paid in full, its a small company with a boss and office workers

at no point was I made aware they would take a full functioning (albeit a worktop-less one!) and leave it how it was left

I'm still fuming  I would have got the worktop delayed if I'd know I'd be in this state

Spent the past 2 evenings re-installing my sink plumbing and taps, got stuck and need a trip to screwfix tomorrow though

All separate trades.

I've been away on business, had a no show plumber today so still have no washing machine and only half the granite fitted.

They will be getting the worst review (once they finish the job)

No apology, balmed me for being inexperience in having worktops fitted, which is true. Though I have witness my parents being done about 5 years ago but they actually reconnected everything afterwards!

Anyhooooo

On a more positive note here is the induction range in the chimney breast with shallow cupboards either side.
The surround will eventually be granite with the back tiles in white metro tiles.

The cupboard in the background has also been stripped back to pine. It's the original larder and was a must keep!

Close up of the reclaimed sink from the garden and the bib taps we went for

And a very grainy photo of the granite slab we chose

Pleased to say everything is finally plumbed back in and granite will be finished next Wednesday

re-fitted and plumbed in sink myself. Invested (£35) in a wet saw and started the tiling myself.

going to need the plug sockets moved up though as the granite plinth gets in the way.
Sockets are LAP 3.1a USB sockets
Having a wine rack made to fit by in the gap by the fridge.

utility as it stands.
having a cupboard made up around the boiler using a cupboard door reclaimed from elsewhere in the house that matches the larder

I've got a big American fridge freeze with ice and water thing, and the washing machine and dryer aren't built in they are just made to look like cupboards

Didn't want to close it away and lose the sense of space

I'll get some more pics up to illustrate

Yes the utility is deeper to accommodate the full size appliances and the large sink. The gap at the side is less than 10mm, the washer needs to be levelled well to stop vibrations!

Not my first time tiling, one of the few jobs I can do, I'm very slow though!

finished the tiling and grouting today

(been away for 6 weeks hence the ridiculously slow progress!)

next stop is matching patio - just in time for summer

.... then complete re-roof and loft conversion

Quick update... Really wanted to keep the original lader as its lasted 160yrs and is huge

Over the years it has been stained several times and painted at least 6 times with a variety of lead based paints
sorry for the poor photos but its the only one I can seem to find

We got them dipped by a local company which took all but the knot sealing shellac and remnants of stain off

I then gave them a quick sand and bees wax

will hang them tomorrow when I've got a second pair of hands
