Vince's Repair Thread - (Console Repairs & Mods)

Nice Sheep.

Seems the best thread to ask as it's sort of ended up as occasional general modding thread. Has anyone used the new TMR sticks for the Dualsense? Any good? Thinking of getting an extreme rate backpaddle kit for one of mine and though while I'm in there I'll change the sticks as well.

Also I saw talk earlier of those cheapish T12 based irons, I've got an old FX888d, I'm used to it and does me fine for the odd bits I do, but it is the old style heating element & sleeve, worth an upgrade to the t12 type of iron?

Love the sheep its a scratch post for the cats really, should be some sort of garden thing but the cats love abusing it!

If you are going to open it up and mod it... grab the sticks as well! its rude not to really! Also t12 iron is so much better then the old single element.. the great thing is every new tip has a new element so no cocking around replacing elements on top of that they are just better, even the cheap one I recommended earlier in the thread!

Ahh you have cats too, that probably explains why my one was absolutely obsessed (even more than usual) with the box you sent my PS3 back to me in!

I do indeed, 3 of the little beasts! Mr G one of my cats is quality control - He basically checks all work over to make sure its up to standard - Hows the
ps3 been holding up since we bodged it? :D

I'll grab the sticks then as soon as I decide what paddle kit I want. Then I just have to find the time to do it :(.

t12 type iron might have to wait until after, then I'll definitely look into swapping if they are that much better.

Dualsense edge should have had them, would have bought one instead of messing around with a normal controller if it did. The racket Sony has going on with the sticks is a joke. £200 and instead of a drift resistant stick, it's the same old crap, but don't worry, you can give us another £20 for a replacement. The planned failure is so blatent, even one revision of the Dualshock 3 had some sort of magnetic/non-contact stick, then Sony went back to pots, just shameless.

Welcome to the world of pads... weirly ive never raplaced a pot in a ps3 pad... they never fail and they pretty much always track dead center. whatever it is they are doing with these modern sticks they should really stop, everything ps4, ps5, xbox, switch, all of them drift yet you never had a dreamcast pad or ps3 pad or a saturn 3d analogue pad drift its a disgrace really take the elite series 2. New that pad is like 100 quid or something and its a nice pad with little paddles and all sorts but ive just fixed 5 of them with drift.

oh my lads... its gonna get real this next week or so!! I even have an AI robot coming in (because why not). But tomorrow we have more steam decks, we have more xbox's, we have special edition 2ds console, n64, more sega.... pads, many pads... my weekly spend on broken stuff is getting out of hand

Also met a nice fella on ebay who is sending me a series x that needs love. its had a bit of a hard time but i think we can fix it. I sent him a link to this thread so Alan, if you are reading this wish me luck :D

Why build one when you can build 2?

Haha, it's been doing great, hopefully it'll keep going for many more years (until the CMOS battery dies anyway!).

Out of curiosity what was wrong with the Megadrives?

Bad vram on one, the other I just needed to give the cart slot a good clean :) vram is a common failure point on the model 1 and its almost always the one furthest away from the rf module.

Late home from the office last night and I got home to some stuff... Our man needed a fast turn around which is not my normal but got home to a series X that came to me as a box of parts:

Nexus connector was ripped off the boar and the sata connector was damaged with the sata cable glued to the broken connector, we needed to replace them both but with the damage and no availability on a series x sata connector we had our work cut out a little....

Rebuilding and replacing the nexus....

This is the sata after I removed the old.. Didnt show any details on the one I bodged on, lets just say it really wasnt made for the series console..

Let there be life!

Alans Sons machine lives to fight another day!

Cracking job that Vince. How on earth did he even damage it like that!

Youtube makes it look easy is the problem. The reality when working on tiny 0.1mm traces like this is a different world to how it can look on YouTube sadly. At least this guy knew it was running away from him and when to stop.
