Vince's Repair Thread - (Console Repairs & Mods)

Hey Vince, I'm another one with an elite pad with sticky shoulder buttons. Do you think you could help, as it's just out if warranty, typically?

Yea I've got loads of buttons in stock and they are nice and easy to swap over. The pad has a bit of a poor design shoulder button wise. I currently have a about 20+ items in the queue so gonna need a week or so.

Okay pal, I'll drop you another message then

Got quite a lot out of the way yesterday which is good and managed to strike a deal to just buy everything that one fella sent me to fix which was a Series S, 3 x Xbox Series Pads, 2x PS4 pads and 2 sets of joycons so now they can come out of the queue.

I'm told that I will need deep pockets next week as well from my normal supplier  I'm being told to expect lots of PS5 / Xbox and possibly even some retro. Week before Xmas was 19 consoles so let's see if he can top that.

Sounds like a treasure trove incoming!

So couple of dualsense stick questions as my hallpi sticks came.

Is the dualsense just trickier than other controllers or have I lost my touch? Xbox one, 360 and something else I can't remember, no issues with an iron and maunal solder sucker, holes cleared fine, no issues. Dualsense, just not having it, wouldn't clear the holes at all. So I broke out the hot air instead (just a cheap 858d) and that did it, should have used that first, but I've never used it properly before, only on some practice items (don't really care if I break a dualsense that is already broken, so perfect thing for my first proper go). That went well, no melted plastic, no out of a place, sticks came out no issue, but it does lead on to my second question.

Best way to clear the holes now? Solder sucker when it works left them clear, hot air doesn't. Solder wick the way to go? I did clear two holes with it, but ran out of time, so I'm assuming it's the way to go when I get back to it.

Thanks.

If you’ve already got the sticks off and are just wanting to clean up the pads / holes, then wick would certainly be my go to method. Mind you, I’m far from the soldering level @Vince is at :D

Yeah, they are off. So it's just clean up, wick worked for two holes before I had to stop, so I think it's the way to go as well. Just I sat there messing around with iron/solder sucker, when hot air did it in a couple of min a stick. So don't want to repeat my mistake, sit there with wick, then someone comes in with "oh you can just do X, just takes a sec" :p

Can't get back to it to the weekend anyway :(.

I’m sure Vince will be along with his take on it, and will make you feel a little silly with how easy he does it too…certainly makes me feel like that :D

I use a solder sucker and my iron on the dual sense boards... air to pull out the pots then just add a bit of leaded and solder sucker the holes clear :) I have my big tip on (knife) and my iron at 450c Normally takes about 1/2 mins to clear all the holes for each pot. The dual sense and series boards are just much thicker so need more heat! But make sure to add a bit of leaded in to make life easier.

Make: Learn to Solder

Ive never read a book on soldering or even on electronics, Ive read a lot of data sheets and have a decent grasp on schematics now but thats more sitting staring at them for hours until something clicks  perhaps I should read a book  I have always been one to learn by just getting on and doing it but sometimes i think I should learn it the proper way.

Oh they are thicker. I guess that's why I had no issue with earlier controller pot changes, but needed hot air for this to remove it.

I'm using 63/37 kester solder. Already added some to get it going with the air and remove originally, now just gotta clear the holes. I'll crank the iron up a bit then, had it set to the same temp that earlier controllers were fine with (but I didn't know series and dualsense controllers had gotten thicker), so I'll crank it up a bit and try with the sucker again to clear them out.

Then hopefully I haven't killed anything with hot air. Board looks good, nothing is melted or out of place and the sticks are in a relativly safe area, but it's still my first time using hot air (outside of practice junk), so won't be convinced it's ok until I see it working :p

We might be hitting a new record here:

And I still have no idea when I might get it back! they replied to my email yesterday with a "its done when its done" kind of email. Bearing in mind its been + 3 months and with them in hand for over 2 months.

As a UK consumer you just cant buy one of these devices really... if it ever goes wrong this is what you are looking at.

I don't suppose you can hold the retailer to account? Or did you buy 2nd hand/third party?

I'm having a similar fight with our pet insurance. Our Persian girl Cookie was put to sleep on 26th September. Submitted documents (Death Certificate, Purchase Contract, Pedigree and nearly two years worth of medical bills we hadn't claimed for) on the 6th October.

I chased them yesterday, for the third time, to be given the usual spiel about the claims department being overloaded and taking "up to four weeks to settle".

I very politely pointed out that they've had nearly FOUR MONTHS to literally make a single phonecall to our vet, to confirm a) the cat definitely existed and b) the cat's definitely dead. That's all they need to do.

I've informed them that if the claim isn't settled by Friday, I'm going to the Ombudsman.

Yea no retailer involved and I've already given them $250 to cover postage. I'm expecting further costs as the $250 they made quite clear was postage and not repair costs so honestly I have no idea from here. 250 for postage is absurd but what can you do.
