Virgin Media Discussion Thread

It's also worth scanning what channels your neighbours wifi is pumping out. If you have an Android phone there is a wifi scanner that shows SSID's broadcasting on each channel including signal strength. Obviously choose the one where there's nothing likely to interfere.

Upgraded from 50mb to 100mb yesterday morning. When the engineers arrived they had to fiddle with it for a while to actually get it to connect. They then left, seemed fine for the rest of the day. Came home tonight to find the connection constantly dropping/reconnecting and my download speed at 6MB/sec (when I can actually use it).

Virgin Media have said that it is an issue in my area which is strange as everyone in my area is saying it is fine for them :(

Every time I upgrade I have nothing but issues for months. Don't even get me started on my Superhub, the wireless is bad. Even dropping the connection to 54Mbps it can't hold a stable connection. I cannot believe they released this product in such a state.

How much extra are those paying who've upgraded from 50 to 100? I'm paying around £42 a month for 50 and a phone line.

100meg is £35 a month with phone line. We are on the VIP50 package and are paying more for the 50meg than the 100meg, i'm confused.

We have had 50meg for about 18 months now and i think it's because 50meg was the fastest at that time but when 100meg became available VM reduced the monthly cost of 50meg but not to those already subscribed to it whether in a contract or not so it would seem.

My GF has been complaining recently that wireless keeps dropping in and out and offers poor speed.

I've just pratted about with the Super Hub and my 15z laptop (50Mbps capable) and have found that the only way to get 50Mbps throughput is to use n mode and 5Ghz. However, my iPhone won't work with this and I doubt her HTC will either. Using the normal 2.4Ghz channel I don't get anywhere near 50Mbps and the connection is really sporadic.

superhub= pants wireless
To be fair the SuperHub = Pants Full Stop
I have been with virgin for 7 years, I recently upgraded from a old SurfBoard Modem to the SuperHub and have had nothing but Problems.
Anyone thinking off upgrading I would not bother if it means you are going to have to change to a SuperHub

You could set it up to use the Superhub as modem only I think, and put the default gateway of the Cisco router as the LAN IP of the superhub.

I tried this reciently, and it worked... to an extent. It solved my wireless issues, but I discovered that uploading videos to youtube would consistently fail. I've no idea why, but it would upload to a random % then suddenly just stop uploading. I ran a ping test while uploading to confirm the upload had stopped (200+ ping while uploading, which dropped to around 20, when the upload froze)

I've since gone back to using just the superhub, and ive had some issues still, but iv'e tweaked around with it, and gotten it to work somewhat...
disabling IP filtering helps stop the wireless connections from dropping constantly, but the superhub is still a pile of crap.

I found when using Windows 7, that if you disable all the homegroup BS, and use regular old school networking, transfer speeds are better when transfering files.
I can get about 8.8 mB/sec (70.4 mb/sec) over wireless N, when connected at 300 Mbps

well have my 100meg install on monday. :)

I'm hoping i can keep my 50meg modem and avoid having the issues that everyone is having with the superhub.

I have my network set up and i don't want to have to go through the hassle of setting up all the port forwarding rules and other tweaks that I have.

Still don't understand why they have to send an engineer out. The person at the end of the phone said they need to apply a booster to my line is that true? Or is it just a sneaky way to try and get my current modem back?

from what i under stand the depending on what 50meg modem you should be fine using it on the 100meg service. i think it only for people who opted for the 50meg hub that are needing the new hub for 100meg. but i wouldn't dare touch the hub as their limited to hell on ports and options would alway recommend going a seperate modem and router.

I phoned Virgin Media for an upgrade from 10Mb today and got roped into getting the Superhub (so long trusty Motorola SB4200 modem & Netgear WGR614 router setup :(), is it just the wireless that is bad? I only really use wired connections so will I be OK?

a lot of the hubs isp are send out have port restriction option limitor in place. so when you want to port forward you might find that option isn't in the hub menu or that port that need to be open to play games or run apps are closed.

Because you get x deal, while new customers wont get x and you also get z.

Contact the twitter team and ask but it will most likely be a answer like that.
[email protected] as far as i remember

Guys,

Massive superhub problems I want to ring up and 1) complain and 2) request the vnm300 (or whatever the model is) which number do I call?

Thanks
Jake
