Virgin Media Discussion Thread

So Superhub 3 now swapped out for the Superhub 4, in modem mode (just ran the SH3 in router mode before), and a TP Link router doing the network work. Everything went smoothly with close to 1gb speeds on the wired PC and over 700mb on my iPad Pro and other wifi 6 devices. The only issue I had was Sky Q, and the mini box upstairs, had to be reset so the Q box could obtain an IP from my new setup.

I decided to connect each device one at a time so I could ensure the name of each device in the router reflects what it is. The only strange thing is my Synology NAS isn't showing up in the DHCP Client List but I think that might be because I have set a static IP on it in it's own settings (I know the, required to get by, minimum on networking).

No QoS on any VM router, you need to go modem mode and 3rd party for that. If you have a SH5 coming, presumably you have a SH3 or lower and they emailed you to explain why you wouldn’t be able to get Gig1 without an upgrade and that they would send you a SH5? Either way my speed upgrade went live as soon as my hub updated with the current firmware, O2 took me complaining before they doubled my data.

I had a SH3 in modem mode now just installed the SH5. Not put it in modem mode yet though.

I'm on 350mb, didn't ask for an upgrade or anything really. Just got an email offering me the SH5 so I accepted. I did take out on O2 sim on 25th November so I could get the Volt benefits but I'm yet to see either the double data or speed bump to 500mb. I spoke to someone from VM a few days ago and they said my speed increase would happen when I activate the SH5 but it hasn't done yet....

Just finished chatting with someone from VM now on what's app about my Volt speed bump. I've been told to wait 24-48 hours now for the increase to take effect. Kinda feels like I'm being fobbed off all the time now. Firstly told to wait for the SH5, now this, even though I'm pretty sure the SH3 has been capable of 500mbps all along!

The SH3 is capable of 500Mb, I've come from that to 1Gb with a SH4, no idea why they didn't send me a SH5. It's in modem mode anyway so no biggy.

Got my speed bump today, spoke to someone on the phone. The WhatsApp help seems like a waste of time and they just want to get rid you your from my experience. Will give it some more texting but the SH5 definately feels like a improvement over the SH3 I had before to the point I haven't bothered putting it in modem mode yet. Gonna leave it over the weekend to see how it performs before probably sticking it in modem mode due to lack of options.

Still waiting for mine, currently on 500, should be "volted" to 1Gigabit, nothing yet.....

Your cooling off period starts from the day they finally activate you, so just stick with your current provider and then cancel Virgin in the cooling off period - at least this way you get the cabling installed which is the bit they seem to struggle with.

rescheduled for 8/1 now, so fingers crossed it’s a worthy move from VF. Now to have a review of firewalls again. Untangle / Sophos XG or have a look at pfsense again. Only running it on an Atom CPU, but I do have a spare R220 PowerEdge server

Hi Everyone,

I have recently been connected to VM 1GB (this week) and all seems well. I say all, web based speedtest seem to be very hit and miss, but actual download speeds seem to reflect a connection around 900Mb+

My experience with VM so far:

What I'd like to understand is if my connectioin suffers from Bufferbloat and if so, do I need SQM (i.e. better hardware). TBH, I'm quite ok with the Hub4 atm, as long as its stable and decent speeds (especially on ethernet, wifi less important).

Not sure what to look for, but I have attached some test results which seem to suggest I am ok ? (note most speedtest comeback with a 500Mb download speed, but download speeds suggest closer to 900Mb)

Any suggestions please?

Guys I’m moving stuff around in my room and now have a power socket way closer to the entry point wall bracket. My install uses an extra power plug that feeds directly into the wall bracket (this a new thing?) but need this cable now to be way shorter, it’s it just normal coax same as the normal virgin cable?

I am on Virgin Media and with Star Trek Online I get frequent map transfer timeouts and with World of Tanks if I hang around since 1.14 to teh end of battle victory/defeat message it hangs and says connection to server interrupted and I have to log in again.

Now some people on...... not sure if im allowed to say but a few have been VM customers and it could be the routing as they have gone through vpn for tanks and it sorted the issue but I don't see how to find out where its going wrong along the line so VM can look into it.

Is there a way to see where hangups are happening along the route as I am playing?

Seems fine other times and ive not tried any other online games atm but not sure what exactly is happening.

Edit
Turned modem mode on and the world of tanks issue went away, turned router mode back on and boom its back.

I have a Superhub 2 so not sure what its doing in router mode to cause this, decided to slap a post on their forums.

How does that look for my new 1gig internet? Everything is running fine, no issues playing online games, mainly ESO, and I get around 950mb download on a wired connection. I am using the SH4 in modem mode with a TP Link router and get around 700mb + on my iPad in the living room where the router is.

Looks awful! There should not be all those spikes really. However if you are working fine and not noticing any issues then I guess its ok......it may settle down a bit.
