Virgin Media Discussion Thread

What do you mean?
There’s a good chunk of threads over on virgins forums. It’s compatibility with older devices isn’t there and you don’t realise how many you actually may have until it’s unfortunately too late.

Nothing else really to it, technology moves on, your gear you currently have doesn’t. It is as purchased as much as I’d love it to grow wifi6e compatibility :D

Going from the Superhub 3 (600Mb) to the 4 (1Gb) my maximum latency has dropped for my TBB meter. Bearing in mind nothing else has changed not even my IP address which remains the same.

SH3

I'm curious as to how the SH5 would compare.

This makes me want to try the SH4, but I was told it had the same chipset as the SH3, so I wouldn't see any difference.

contract ends soon, currently have bt fttc 80/20 for £40 a month. only other provider in my area is vm. are there any good deals for 1 gig?
Go with m500, add O2 SIM, get VOLT for less than the price difference between M500 and Gig1. Technically you could then cancel the O2 SIM if VOLT is applied before the cooling off period on the SIM. Ofcurse if you can switch mobile to O2 andyway it becomes a no brainer. Don't forget Quidco/TCB.

One thing for me is - "How static is the IP addresses?" I say this because I would require a static IP for running servers and the only thing I can see on VM is a business line with a full static ip, which is much more expensive. Would you say IP's are rather "sticky"?

My IP has changed maybe 2-3 times in ~8 years. Would using DDNS solve it if that is too often?

I've had the same IP for at least 2 years now, of course your mileage may vary.

Secret words are.... Cancel my account, I'm leaving. Then wait for retentions to call or text.

I know that one but I need something else until Lila can connect me.
When I do ring up I know I will get Retentions offering something that "Isn't on their computers" but it will be too late.

I had another 2 hours with Customer Relations who are above retentions - got absolutely nowhere.
All 3 calls have had them reading from a card that I had my 'discounts' when I joined up with NTL back in the 90s :)
I kept telling them I had no discounts at any time, I was put on NTL from C&W and then put on Virgin from NTL and no discounts were offered.
"Well I'm sorry we can't give you any more discounts because you had one in the 90s" :(
No I didn't.

The best offer is what I'm on now - M350, TV and Landline and it will come down from £69.50 to £48 but I've got to sign up for 18 months.
I have repeated I don't use the TV because I have an amazing satellite system and if they check my connections my TIVO hasn't been turned on for 2 years.
If they check my landline it hasn't been used since December 2019 so I don't need them.
They refuse to listen, I can't wait for Lila.

How can you be with them so long and still seemingly not grasp basic concepts?

Relations and Retentions are literally the same people in the same office, just different historic names. Yes, you have inbound and outbound along with sub teams working different campaigns and with different budgets and criteria depending on where in the process you are, but they shift queues depending on call volume.

Disconnecting two services will almost never get you a cheaper deal, its like that by design and has been for many, many decades. Instead of looking at it that you're paying for TV/Tel and don't use them, look at what you would pay for solo broadband, if it's more than you're paying for a bundle, then in effect you are having money by having additional service. Eg it's cheaper for me to have Gig1, TV, Tel, SIM than it is to pay £60/m for Gig1 by itself.

With that established, speaking to anyone in VM for 2hrs isn't happening, literally nobody in any VM call centre I have had sight of the queue for would entertain a member of staff on a call for that length of time. It's also not required. Call relations, ask to disconnect all the services in 30 days because you feel they are too expensive/poor value and you only really use the internet. Politely decline the initial offers unless they're decent and book the disconnection. Make sure the landline phone is plugged in/working, as they're likely to call you on it. Wait for the first call and discuss it with them, if you get an offer you are happy with, then great. If not politely decline explaining that while it's better and you'll think about it, it's still a little too expensive for you. Rinse and repeat. At worst you get to day 29 and change your mind, heck you can go to day 30 and be disconnected and still change your mind, it's still an office only reconnection.

Not really, I would rather have a static. If it changed couple times a year I wouldn’t mind but not every time the router rebooted.

Would just mean updating the DNS on the odd occasion.
In the last 2+ years I have had zero IP changes (it may have in the first few days, I hadn't forwarded anything to the local servers then), and I have rebooted every few months/tripped the electric/power cuts occasionally. It's not marketed as a static IP, but it's been essentially static for years.

That's interesting to know, thanks for this. I'm going to investigate prices see what I can get. 1G is the max my area can have now.

From my experience, and this may have changed as it was around 10 years ago, but you generally get a new IP if you switch from their router to your own, or vice versa. But you usually get the same IP you had before.

Yep, I was told a similar thing but my latency and also bufferbloat have definitely improved solely going from SH3 to SH4.

Plus the look of the 4 IMO is much nicer in comparison with that light going all the way around, which can be turned up really bright or turned off fully altogether. In fact, It was so nice that I moved the modem position from hidden away in a cuphoard to residing in plain view on a shelf! ;)

It's a shame that the SH5 seems to have gone back to the boring rectangle.

How is the UI compared to the SH3? I always find the SH3's interface quite lethargic.
