Virgin Media Discussion Thread

The rest of my kit is in a cabinet out of sight, but the Virgin cable comes in right next to my TV in the living room so the hub is sat next to my amp on full display!

As alluded to above, all my core network kit, plus my server, is in the garage. The ingress point for the cable used to be into the office upstairs (second bedroom) but I got VM to relocate it to the garage for £35 which I thought was quite reasonable.

I just renewed my VM broadband. I don't have any packages, just 125 mb/s cable broadband. I've been paying £25 pm for the last 18 months and the 18 months before that. I got that last 18 months at £25 because I threatened to leave.

Just recently I got an email saying my 18 month contract has now finished and my next bill is £47.25. I called VM just now and threatened to leave again and they've renewed me at £27 for another 18 months. I did ask if they could round it down to £25 but she said she couldn't. So, I think £27 is fine. Does anyone think I should have pushed to get £25 or would that have been too greedy, lol?

Well I've bit the bullet.

M250
Phone line
10GB 02 Sim

£29.99 per month with £10.00 set up fee. Can't justify anything faster at the moment I use enough on 80Mb/s anyway. Install date 17th of Dec including porting of a landline + mobile.

Moving away from Zen Internet, their prices now are far too steep.

I'm paying £24 for 200 (+ £6 boosted to 350 with O2 sim) so you can get better.

Are code 20 with issues again, lots of packet loss since after 2am this morning:

Managed to finally get through on the phone and the automated voice said engineers are working on a "complex" issue so no ETA, held on the line to speak to someone who confirmed the issue has been ongoing since the 9th and that I would be credited on the next bill up to the fix date which is tomorrow at 15:55... Online service status either says there is no problem or "cannot test your service right now try later".

VM really do need to sort out their status tools.

I cannot WFH using the connection as a result.

That's a fab price if it's boosted. :) I'm fine with 29.99 for now as long as they don't try to keep raising it.

So its £24 + £6 to O2 just to be clear (was paying £12 for previous SIM on Three so saving on that side too) :) Pretty good especially as 350 is more like 380+ too. Hopefully upload increase comes next year although it doesn't bother me that much, I rarely upload much for home/work.

oh right, well the service I just joined is 17.99 + 12.00 I forgot the bills split now.

Can anybody recommend a decent router suitable for a big house? Im on 150mb virgin and the standard router is crap on the wifi side, i got a tp link homeplug to try and improve the signal, but it keeps making the wifi on the virgin router go down and the tplink wifi goes down also, so id like a single router that will cover everything.

Cable to a couple of locations and then access points? Depends on the size of the house depends how many APs you may require.

If you live in a big home, a different single router isn’t ever going to make a difference.

APs can only transmit up to certain levels, then the end client (your phone, tablet, TV whatever) can only hear and transmit back from/to a certain distance based on the hardware. Both limiting factors.

The likelihood is you need to get a mesh kit or several APs, hardwire them with Cat6 cable around your home if you want proper coverage.

Thanks for the fast response guys. Ive got cat5 cable going to the top floor which is just going into a switch then onto devices. but it's general wifi signal that is the issue, where you'd expect a decent signal but its not, like the next room or room above for e.g, i assumed it was the router (Hub3.0). I dont really understand why the homeplug keeps dropping internet. The singal from it to my phone is great, just no service a lot of the time (little exclamation mark next to the wifi icon on phone) Similar story with the hub3, wifi dropping all the time.
