Virgin Media Discussion Thread

I made the switch over to Virgin yesterday and have had Gig1 broadband however my upload appears to be capped at circa 50mbit rather than the 110mbit advertised. I have tried the Hub5 in both modem and router mode but zero difference. Is this likely to be a technical issue due to hardware in my local cabinet or an incorrect profile set at activation? Any other common issues to be aware of?

I have run speedtests at various times of day and still achieved similar results so dont believe it to be a utilisation issue in the area.
What up and down speeds do you have in your Configuration section?

Primary Downstream Service Flow
Max Traffic Rate

Primary Upstream Service Flow
Max Traffic Rate

What does it say in your VM dashboard.
I don’t think all areas have the upgrade yet.
Same ole same when part of the network isn't ready, it just gets peoples backs up!
Been the same since the Very first Modems I installed from 256K

Appears that the upstream rate is capped at 55mbit if I am reading the below correct? From a little research it appears that my upstream is on DOCSIS 3.0 rather than 3.1 and as you say, the network isnt yet ready to provide me with the advertised upload speed?

Primary Downstream Service Flow
Max Traffic Rate 1230000450 bps

Primary Upstream Service Flow
Max Traffic Rate 55000270 bps

yeah 55 up is what you have so 50MBps.
As ChrisD. said, it's a waiting game.
Just keep rebooting your Modem once a month or so, but you should get a notification, I do mean should!

It isnt just down to docsis 3.1 channels, I already had the channels when they did the start of June, but still didnt get the higher upload until end of August. I think they had to do a node split to get my area utilisation down. But yeah checking if you have the channels is a start.

I've just got off my second phone call today to cancel, apparently their systems are down and will call me back on Wednesday, so testing live chat as simply just want to cancel now, had enough and when doing the maths paying £££ is ridiculous when all I watch is F1 and Netflix 9/10.

Finally managed to speak to someone, not sure if it's decent but its good enough for me. Gig1, 2x TV Boxes, Mega TV, Netflix, Kids, Sky Sports and Cinema (incl HD) all for £76 a month.

Had some bizarre behaviour yesterday, but can't tell if it was VM or my PC.

My PC connects directly to my router via ethernet. Yesterday from about 7pm till 10pm, my ethernet connection kept dropping to wifi, then jump back on to ethernet again. It'd jump back and forth like that repeatedly about 5 times in the space of about 10 seconds, then be ok for a couple of minutes, then start dropping/reconnecting again for a few seconds, over and over for hours. It was pretty bad timing as I was in the middle of a competitive game when it dropped me, which is typical.

I haven't had any recent Windows updates, and looking through my Event Viewer, I saw the disconnect event and I have had it in the past, but it was mostly like one or twice with months in between. Getting it dozens and dozens of times within several hours was just weird.

Looks like I'll be able to move to Grain early in the new year, scheduled to build out my street in December, so I can finally say goodbye to Virgin :)

@xb8browney how has Grain been for you as I know you made the same switch earlier this year. Did you go for a static IP address?

To be completely honest, I'm far from satisfied with my current situation.

Obtaining a static IP from Grain was a tedious process that took two months and numerous emails. I even tried reaching out on Facebook, but it was only after posting a review on Trustpilot that they finally took action. However, even after acquiring the static IP, I continue to face ongoing issues, as some services mistakenly identify my location as Germany. I reported this problem back in July, but I have yet to receive a response.

It seems like Grain may have expanded their services, but it doesn't appear that they've increased their staffing levels accordingly.

Recently, I encountered another problem while gaming. Although I haven't played games for about a year, I started playing COD with a group of friends, all of whom are in the UK. When we use in-game matchmaking, I sometimes experience a ping of 140ms. Interestingly, one of my friends, who is also with Grain but in a different city, faces the same issue. In contrast, the rest of our squad, who use different ISPs in the UK, maintain pings under 20ms. This suggests there may be an intermittent routing issue. I reported this problem as well, but once again, I received no response.

Furthermore, Grain locks us out of the supplied router, forcing us to jump through hoops to use our own router.

The only saving grace is that the price is good £30 for 900 and they haven't billed me for the static IP but I don't know if this is a mistake or not.

Oh dear lol, looks like I might be staying with Virgin for a bit longer then! Thankfully their Gig1 service has been about as good as it gets for a Virgin line.

The CGNAT issue was one of my biggest concerns with Grain. I'm hoping they get bought out by someone else who can operate the network a bit better. Their website states they're looking to implement IPv6 eventually.

I was paying £62 to virgin so I'm still way better off and the symmetrical upload is great.

Ironically I expect CGNAT is more complex to implement than IPv6, madness they could rollout CGNAT but not IPv6. Seems a similar story with some of the other startups as well, seems like they scrambled their network build together as a last minute thing or something before they launched.

Well, there’s the Hub 5x which is on their FTTP trial but there won’t be a Hub 6 for a long time.

that's what you said a while back. :D
