Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Contract is ending next month with sky and I Was going to join VM but there network seems flakey at peak times and ping times are a bit high for my liking, Sky only do fttc 80mb at my property but pings are 8ms so may as well stick with them.

Its one of those things you won't know till you try..... but another way is walk down your entire street both sides and check everyone's front homes do they have a virgin media small box on the front or a white or grey small cover on the front side wall and even a wire running out of the ground or on the side of the driveway?

At least this way you can see how congested your street is or how many people are hogging that Virgin media service in your road. High utilization can cause more problems (services goes down usually Internet) if too many homes have VM services especially Broadband.

If there are lots of homes with sky dishes they may still yet had virgin media bb so again that may still hog the bandwidth and speeds and overall service of VM.

That is the case with my street at least but then again BT abandoned us and gave up since VM fibre optic was there, its only in the last 1-2 years we got fibre which I will more then likely be moving to once the contract is up since my high utilization street the VM service goes down weekly.

Never had a problem longer than a few hours in all the years I've had a VM connection, either way you have 14 days in which to Cancel should it be that bad.
Average ping as follows......

How would you know that unless you joined them and tested it for yourself?

Ive been with VM for years and apart from the rare outage that lasted and hour or two at most it’s been rock solid throughout the day and at peak times.

Ooft. It's one of the reasons why I took VM, as I watch a lot of BT/TNT (Rugby Union). With its inclusion, the overall deal was super competitive. Looks like I get to keep it until the end of the contract luckily.

Yeah, that'll likely lose them thousands of customers alone.

Its one of the main reasons I like VM despite all the headache and aggro, if there offering TNT/BT streaming for a tenner a month who is going to stay for that.

Its possible VM will see and prepare for this though once everyone's contracts are up they may offer slightly more discounts on the other packages and worm their way back into your bank accounts.

Thanks for your input guys, I’ll try to get sky down to £20 just for the broadband as we don’t watch sky tv anymore so not paying for it after October 8th. Definitely don’t want to join virgin though brcause in April I would get an estimated rpi 3.9% and some other price rise to do with inflation. No thanks.

I gave month notice a few days ago, contract ends next month.
Had the full works for 65 a month, but only really watch sports. Losing TNT is a biggie.
They offered me the same price but without TNT, so I said no thanks.
I really need to sort broadband, so may just sign up for that. I believe you can then get the Virgin Stream for free? Then add on things. Looking at current prices, sky sports and tnt would cost £28 a month (which isn't bad). Not sure what to do. I could always find other means for the sports

You used to be able to get BT Sport as an add on with an EE SIM, not sure if they have stopped that though with the change to TNT. Was browser/app based only but you could have it on big screen via Apple TV or similar for an extra fee.

EDIT

Is that £20 per month still with EE sim?

Otherwise its looking £29.99 per month via BT homepage, you got the VM streaming mini box but then you need BB I think with that then pay £35 for a one off activation fee then £10 per month for the TNTsports addon.

Basically either way its looking like you have to spend £20 if not £30 extra per month for TNT/BTsports, lets start a Virgin Mutiny.

It's free with an EE sim but you need to get a plan where you can add the benefit. I went for "Unlimited 24 month plan £18 was £36" and applied an NHS code on top.

I made the switch over to Virgin yesterday and have had Gig1 broadband however my upload appears to be capped at circa 50mbit rather than the 110mbit advertised. I have tried the Hub5 in both modem and router mode but zero difference. Is this likely to be a technical issue due to hardware in my local cabinet or an incorrect profile set at activation? Any other common issues to be aware of?

I have run speedtests at various times of day and still achieved similar results so dont believe it to be a utilisation issue in the area.
