Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Looks like Virgin might have to bring forward some speed upgrades or they'll be lagging (pun probably intended) the competition

EE must have been gutted when Vodaphone announced the below, they didn't 'set the new standard' for long :D

Fingers crossed, is their 2 Gbps service in Ireland offered offered over the DOCSIS network though?

I can get both EE and Vodaphone so hoping for some good competition :)

Also I would image that both the new services offered by EE and Vodaphone will be using FTTH with the inherent latency advantage of that tech. over DOCSIS

It still won't deliver anywhere close to the marketed numbers - you're going to end up with 2Gbps headline speeds sold with 25Mbps Wi-Fi coverage guarantees, and people running speed tests from a two year old Samsung phone wondering why they are getting under half what they are "paying for".

Just got off the phone to Virgin about a cancellation vs. renewal (15 year customer). Current situation is that they'll offer me 1GB line for £60 per month for 18 months, with a free new router thrown in (heh), and they'll call me in 10 days to see if they can come up with anything better but I'm not optimistic. Haven't had many issues with them over the years but the competition has improved and now it's an actual question for me because if the opposition is seemingly cheaper and better, well... yeah. Looking at EE, Aquiss, etc. and this seems to be the time of reckoning...

VM: £60pm, 1GB, 18 month contract
EE: £50pm, 900MB (first 3 months £0), 24 month contract
Aquiss: £55pm, 1GB (first 3 months £27.50), 12 month contract

Do all the Openreach options generally provide the same internet reliability given they're all on the same network? Any opinions on people who have recently switched to/from Virgin Media regarding quality difference? Any thoughts on Aquiss/EE from long-term customers?

EDIT: Forgot to detail the issues - nothing major. Six or so hours of limited unavailability of websites 1-2 times per year, and the ping to the California-based FFXIV servers jumped from 250ms to 400ms, VPN chopped it back down to 180-200ms.

Which router do you use with them? I did notice your posts about them earlier being really positive.

Kinda hoping for something with 6 ports if possible but can probably manage with 4 (2x PC, Sky box, 2x consoles - currently I just drop one console to wifi).

@Loony BoB Most people loathe it but as long as you get put on a decent gateway routed close to you Vodafone might be worth a shot. Why? It's currently £34 a month with £63 cashback on the 900 Mbps plan (yes Openreach and not CityFibre).

Is that the whole contract? As that’s tempting. I can always cancel and move back to Aquiss if it’s terrible.

It will unfortunately have the price increase come April 2024. I do think they are doing this offer to gauge interest come Black Friday to see where to place it. I can see the same price (maybe £33) with a guaranteed £100 giftcloud (sometimes you can even do topcashback on top).

If you time it right, could be worth a switch indeed. You want to try and overlap with the black friday deals. A good way to get back on Aquiss with 6 months half price if it's bad (unless their terms don't allow it).

I would pick FTTH over DOCSIS any day of the week. Virgin is quite frankly rubbish for gaming, not only is DOCSIS poor but Virgins routing & peering is also awful...

Thats rubbish, ive literally just signed up at nearly half that.
Yeah, I gave them a lot of flack for it. Over at Sky, because I'm a platinum customer (something like 10+ years consecutive), I get to renew my contracts with the same deals as those who are joining Sky for the first time. Virgin? "Hey look, instead of paying triple, we're only asking you to pay double. Aren't we lovely? So glad you've been with us for 15 years."

That's not always true for Sky either. We've had Sky for over 20 years(though our internet hasn't always been with them), and our internet has just come up for renewal. They aren't even willing to offer us the new customer deals. Though to be honest even if they did I don't think we'd accept those either, as they aren't that competitive. Like Sky TV they might give better deals if you do tell them you're cancelling I guess, but it's a lot more risky to pull that trigger with internet since you run the risk of having no internet for a few days, and losing the phone number(if applicable).

I just think the big companies rely on most people not willing to go through the hassle of cancelling/swapping etc so they won't give you a good price unless you show action.

You may be better porting your phone to someone like Vonage who have different tariff. The one I chose was the premium one at £16 per month for unlimited non premium calls and mobile calls. Also unlimited calls to USA and Canada plus others. The system plugs into any broadband router. All landlines are switching to the voip system in any event.
