Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Ah that makes sense, no point in pulling cables/work if the homeowner isn't interested! Yes I check that site regularly seen them coming into road around my area

Not long, once its all installed on the pole, it could be just weeks, my area had all the fibre installed to the poles recently and within weeks it was all available via the websites to order, and you will find its not just BT, it opens up a few choices of ISP that use the same infrastructure, Youfibre, EE and of course BT.

I see the looping up the black cables and leaving them half way up the telephone poles! Good to know....

Yeah will be like that for a while, it was only last week openreach or whoever come along and tidied that roll of cable up, but before that full fibre has been available in my street for a good 2-3 months now.
I can’t exactly remember how long it was once they installed the roll of cable but it didn’t seem very long, I just kept checking the bt/openreach sites.

I've seen them rolled up round my town so this makes sense

Aquiss FTTP will be installed on 1 Feb, so it will then be 'Goodnight from me' in terms of Virgin

I know how you feel, I gave my 30 days notice a few days ago, finally leaving on 14th Feb with Virgin. I do have Community Fibre coming Friday for my 1Gb install for £25 and free installation so can't complain :)

I wish I could follow you all in leaving but my local cabinet hasn’t been upgraded for fibre and no updates on when it will be, so stick with virgin or go adsl @ around 2mbs download

I've been with Cambridge Cable (bought by NTL, subsequently bought by Virgin) since around 1998 when I subscribed to their 50Mbps service, this was an upgrade from a model so it really was a game changer back then :)

I'm probably going to miss the raw download speed of my 1Gbps connection but I'm looking forward to lower latency and better support from Aquiss.

50Mbps? You were late, I started with 128k via Nynex but also looking to get rid.

I started with 56k, but actual speed was 33k since 56k was so new lol , never forget the dial-up tone :) ..Btw my Community Fibre is up and running, very fast and free installation :), all I have to do now is send Virgin their SH3 back to them :) .

Was the 128K a digital rather than analogue service though. I went through plenty of modems before digital, my trusty Pipex Dial account and 9600/14400/28800 baud. I remember getting then 56600 flash update for my US Robotics modem.... Ah the good old days :)

I remember having 512k cable via Telewest (became Blueyonder, became Virgin Media) in 2001.

I've had cable at various houses over the 20 odd years since and one thing is the same, peak time congestion massively impacting the performance.

contract coming to an end in April having been with cable since it was called blueyonder , cant moan with the service but want better deal and always hassle chasing up to get them to offer better deal when I dont have FTTP options, but last few weeks I seen them rolling up cables on the poles hoping get FTTP here soon , Im happy with at least 100mb but only Virgin offer that right now

Community Fibre came last Friday lunch time and was up and running within 90 minutes, they run cable from telegraph pole to house, one hole drilled and I recieved a new (yes new in the box) Linksys MX5400 router and Adtran SDX 631 modem all setup, I removed their router and used mine, very simple, ethernet cable from their modem to your wan port on your router, router was already set to DHCP so was a case of reboot and all up and running.

My average speeds are 945Mb both on upload and download (wired), Virgin will be sending me a box to return thier crappy SH3 which I was using with my router.
Virgin were offering me crappy renew deals and I'm not paying £38 for 125Mb speed and weekend calls on phone (I was paying £46), I went with Community Fibre 1GB for 25 quid a month (also waiting for my £100 Amazon voucher via referal) with no land phone (phone is only 10 quid more with unlimited UK landline calls if you need it).

My contract ends on 14th Feb with Virgin with final bill nearly £50, glad I made the switch to Community fibre, bascially no issues and rock solid in these early days :).
