Virgin Media UK Launch 2Gbps Broadband and Symmetric Speeds UPDATE2
Broadband ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) has this morning announced that they've become the first "major" UK internet provider to publicly launch a residential 2Gbp

I had noticed they have dropped the lower end packages from the website, 264Mbps is the minimum now. https://www.virginmedia.com/broadband/sale
I'd definitely pay £6 a month for symmetrical speeds, although I don't think I'd need 2GbpsI doubt they'd ever release the figures but a £6/month uplift for symmetric should very quickly make it obvious what people's opinions of needing matched upload and download speeds are.
Turns out you can only get 2Gig or symmetrical speeds if you're on their full fibre network, so those in VM's own RFoG FTTP and HFC areas are out of luck.
Even ISPReview's latest clarification update is slightly confusing.
So it appears you can only get the new Gig2 service and symmetrical speeds on their new FTTP areas and NOT in areas which have heen upgraded from HFC to FTTP? From what I understand, these "HFC upgraded" areas currently have fibre to a box at your premises which then converts it back to DOCSIS and into the "normal" cable modem, is this the case? Is it these upgraded areas that they mean when they say "RFoG FFTP"?
If so then surely that has to be a temporary thing? I can understand the new services not being offered over the old DOCSIS HFC network but, given that the vast majority of their network will be these "HFC upgraded to FTTP" areas, they have to offer these new services over that network at some point or they'll be screwed.
Once they finish all the upgrades the only problem will be the pricing. Hopefully they'll realise that the competition with the altnets is untenable with their current pricing and they'll reduce.

Bye bye Virgin it's been emotional, hello Aquiss (FTTP) (look at that ping/latency!)
