Virgin Media Discussion Thread

I doubt they'd ever release the figures but a £6/month uplift for symmetric should very quickly make it obvious what people's opinions of needing matched upload and download speeds are.

I had noticed they have dropped the lower end packages from the website, 264Mbps is the minimum now. https://www.virginmedia.com/broadband/sale

Probably due to competition as Virgin are not as cheap as they use to be, as some of you know last month they still tried to offer me at end of my contract the same M125 package with eight quid discount, I said no thanks and moved to Community Fibre 1GB package for £25 :).

Bye bye Virgin it's been emotional, hello Aquiss (FTTP) (look at that ping/latency!)

I'd definitely pay £6 a month for symmetrical speeds, although I don't think I'd need 2Gbps

Turns out you can only get 2Gig or symmetrical speeds if you're on their full fibre network, so those in VM's own RFoG FTTP and HFC areas are out of luck.

Even ISPReview's latest clarification update is slightly confusing.

So it appears you can only get the new Gig2 service and symmetrical speeds on their new FTTP areas and NOT in areas which have heen upgraded from HFC to FTTP? From what I understand, these "HFC upgraded" areas currently have fibre to a box at your premises which then converts it back to DOCSIS and into the "normal" cable modem, is this the case? Is it these upgraded areas that they mean when they say "RFoG FFTP"?

If so then surely that has to be a temporary thing? I can understand the new services not being offered over the old DOCSIS HFC network but, given that the vast majority of their network will be these "HFC upgraded to FTTP" areas, they have to offer these new services over that network at some point or they'll be screwed.

I'm kinda in the middle, I'm in a new area, but RFoG FTTP which hasn't been upgraded from HFC. But as far as I can tell, it's not a XGS-PON area.

Yes, anything using DOCSIS at all won't get these new services, though hopefully that's temporary. However, I'm not certain DOCSIS 3.1 (or VMs implementation of it) can support symmetrical uploads at the higher speeds such as Gig1 and 2.

My area is RFoG, which is annoying as it was built just before they started the XGS-PON rollouts.

I've just had a look at Nexfibre's rollout plan and my town is on the list for this year.

Once they finish all the upgrades the only problem will be the pricing. Hopefully they'll realise that the competition with the altnets is untenable with their current pricing and they'll reduce.

They're still operating on the basis that many of their customers don't have a viable alternative. I certainly don't as none of the damn FTTP providers seem interested in servicing my road.

Once there's more competition then yes, hopefully prices will come down but right now I don't really give a toss about the price, it's availability that's my issue.

So despite me saying I'll change from VM as they were just messing me around with renewal/cancellations, the retentions team offered 125Mb for £19 a month. It's a decent price so over the 18 months I'll save about £150 over going with PlusNet.
So come next renewal, even if they're being annoying, if I think of it as a few hours of 'work', it'll be less frustrating hopefully.

What mesh (2 points) set up should I get for Gig1? Everything is wired downstairs, but upstairs is my study with my work laptop and gaming PC and I can't run cables due to solid walls, so need a decent WiFi 6 mesh. I don't need a 2.5gbps port, but will plug the PC into the mesh router. I was using Google WiFi 1st gen on my 300mb line and it worked ok but can't handle faster speeds. My PC can handle WiFi 6.

Routing to game servers is way better on basically any and all FTTP provider. Ping stability is supremely better and that leads to smoother and less laggy online gameplay. No matter how you feel now about online gameplay on Virgin Media it will be much better on a FTTP provider.
