Virgin Media Discussion Thread

I thought recording being missing would be an issue, and it is to some extent, but I’m assuming most things have an ‘on-demand’ element now that negates this for the vast majority of people.

An option for recording that I was looking at was to use a HDHomerun with Plex, you can see it here in action.

It doesn't sense to me to combine Freeview with a recorder because the majority (probably all of it to be fair) of the stuff you'd want to watch is on catch-up. So unless you're recording to maintain an archive or you're really into the trash that is on Sky Mix and Quest it seemed like a waste of money and time.

Maybe for pay TV there's an argument for recording, but the main use of that is sport and I can't imagine being a position where I can't watch a football match live so I avoid all spoilers for half a day and then watch the whole thing timeshifted, but maybe that is a common use case.

My contract ends and I am doing the retentions dance, but I may change to FTTP now its in my area.
For that exact same deal they wanted £88 lol

I have requested to cancel and see if I get a call back with better offers.

I requested, gave my notice of 30 days then rang a special number I found on the net to get through to the UK and better retention deals.

Got offered something, almost agreed then pushed luck a little and got the above.

When I changed TV to one with Freesat built in instead of using an old Humax box, I thought I'd miss recording but never did. I think the TV can record if you plug in a USB HD or something but never found the need.

I personally use the recorder to record the F1 as I'd rather watch a race on a Sunday evening than be confined to the house during the day, particularly whilst on the European leg of the calender in the UK Summer months.

Same, I usually have a phone free afternoon on Sunday and put it on do not disturb, avoid live radio etc. Allows me to have decent family time during the afternoon and relax watching the race once the boy is in bed.

The F1 is also my only use case for recording really for almost exact same situation as ChrisD, but I've resorted to highlights for a number of years now as the price on every platform is just too darn high. And I'm a big fan. VM was looking like at least £35 per month, which is uneconomical when I can just buy a Now TV pass if I really wanted it live. That said, Now TV doesn't let you record, Sky with a dish or VM cable box would. Streaming even the highlights is worse picture quality than live.

Yeah I went for NowTV (using the app on my TV), you can get it cheaper than what they advertise it for if you do the steps towards cancelling. It does mean you can only watch live as you said but this isn't a problem for me as would watch C4 highlights if I can't make it or worst case YouTube highlights.

Anyone know what number VM retentions usually call from? I cancelled all my VM services on Friday last week and I've been getting a call from a London number for the last few days, ending in 396. Just wondering if this is some kind of generic scam, something else or VM. No voicemail left of course. I'll answer it when I see it ringing but they always seem to call when I'm busy :)

if you just type the number into google, website called "who called me" should display who the number is from

I have TNT included in my contract. VM just emailed me and said it’s getting removed on the 30th of June unless I fill in a form as I haven’t used it in the last 6 months. I’ve not used it in two weeks or so but I use it most weeks. Bit cheeky of them.

How bizarre why would they remove it that on you to remove, why does it make any difference to them.

I think it’s because I got it when it was included in the package and they’re trying to save money. Bit bloody cheeky as there’s no mention of a price adjustment. Someone else got the same email and started a thread on their community forums which I’ve replied to as have others.

If it starts with 020 its Virgin Retentions.

I'm moving into a new place in the next week. At my current place I'm stuck on ADSL2+ @ 10Mb from Plusnet and no access to fibre, but I can get Virgin installed at the new place am going for the M500 option. Went up to day to take a few pics and see what the cable situation is like and found this. I know you guys will know what it is.

Box on the exterior front wall. Can't open as it's cable tied shut.

It comes out of the interior wall like this.

One is obviously a coax for an aerial or something, but the other?

One will be for the TV box and one for the cable modem. The input on the V6 TV box is a standard aerial connection rather than screw type F-connector while the cable modem uses the F-connector.

My Virgin setup has a splitter with two F connectors and one is an F-type to standard aerial adapter on for the V6 box.

Access has been removed despite filling out the form.
