Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Had VM installed last Monday and it stopped working this afternoon with a flashing blue light on the Hub and was off for about 6 hours. All the time the App status was saying all was good... Fortunately BT fttp was still working as not cancelled for a few weeks.

Hope this isn't a sign of things to come with them.
Did you call them or did it fix itself?

Signed back up and installed today so I can get a decent connection speed that's now needed. Posted over in the nexfibre thread but modem mode still not available on Hub 5x, despite being told it was. The Hub 5x is very limited in options and I don't want double NAT.

Seeing all your posts reminds me of my terrible experience with VM last time I was a customer. I can't even be bothered to try and call them.

The Hub 5x does have a modem mode. I've not tried it, but it's there as an option. Might have been added in a firmware update.

What’s your source of info for that?

The modem mode page does exist, but it’s hidden and not implemented properly and the modem won’t give out a public IP for a router WAN connection. People have tried coaxing it to in different ways, but it’s temporary and unreliable.

My bad, you're right its the hidden page i'd checked it out whilst setting mine up.

Interesting AMA from retentions employee at VM:

Wonder if he is actually an employee, as he keeps telling people to wait for outbound retentions, but an employee would know less than 50% of cancellations get a outbound call.

Although he does mention things about the internal system on downgrades, and incentives to upgrade.

Another ridiculous multi-hour negotiation exercise with Virgin as my contract is due to finish in the next couple of weeks and the out of contract 'standard price' was more than double what I have been paying.

However, as last time WhatsApp chat was the way to go - started with regular customer service who could only offer something which was still a 35% price increase on last year for the same package. Threatened to cancel so then transferred to retentions, who eventually came up with decent offers.

I finally settled on a similar package to last year (500Mbit internet, mixit TV and anytime phone) for £44 p/m which is actually £7 cheaper than I've been paying for the last few months. If they had just initially offered to continue the same package at the same price I'd probably have taken it!

Last time I did this dance, I just asked to be put through to retentions. Does this still work? Ended up having a lovely chat and got a decent deal out of it. I need to sort out my parents costs, so hoping it will be a similar experience

just cancelled their broadband, just joined on monthly for couple of months to see if it has improved. its woeful, only went for the 50mbs deal. my gawd i was single figures at some points, even trying to play online at 1am, my ping was 300:eek:. so glad tried the monthly contract now. BT installing full fibre in dec for us. going back to BT now, wasnt perfect by night and day better than VM

If cabled, it sounds like you are in an over subscribed area. I get 1.13 Gbps pretty much all the time.

Changed my Thinkbroadband to the correct (new) IP, and getting this from it:

My VM Hub is in modem mode, with my Unifi UCG doing the rest.
Expect it is a settings issue somewhere, any ideas?

Thanks

only just been put in here, had VM many years ago and was woeful, could be right as new install many signed up, maybe too many, again my speed down in teens mbps. glad to get shot tbh, customer service is non existent, only time i got to speak to an actual person was to raise a complaint. never will i go near VM again

Virgin was always decent for speeds in my area though I was one of those affected by the 50Mb upload issue on my 1Gb package for about a month which hastened my switch to city fibre.

Definitely was worth the switch, much faster speeds, way faster upload and the connection just feels snappier and no having a big superhub in modem mode anymore.

It’s also nice having a static ipv4 and v6 IP.

Their online/Whatsapp chat is useless. The best offer they can do is £1 lower than what I will pay after my contract expires. I did call them earlier and the offer was £6 lower.

The problem in my area is that only VM offers download speeds higher than 15Mb otherwise I would switch away from VM.

Just tell them you're leaving and put your notice in as it costs too much. They'll give a couple of offers at that point which might be okay but better still wait until they phone you back within the 30 days.

I didn't even have to fight they transferred me to customer relations live chat and they offered me £28 a month for M500 (Gig1 due to been with O2)
