Virgin Media Discussion Thread

My contract is due to end on the 29th December, figuring I am above the required notice I tried to give notice via live chat. They kept pressuring to know why I was leaving and who I was going to, couldn't be bothered so just kept posting that I am not required to give that info. After 30 minutes of this, they then come back and say they can only put in 60 days max notice and asked if I wanted to proceed to cancel on the 13th Dec ( I think).  I said you could have saved us both 25 minutes and said this at the start.

Have they sent you any renewal offers via email or on the VM website?

Not since the chat, but I have had some automated offers every month for the past few months. I'm not interested in renewing, beyond perhaps their lowest BB package as a backup which my wife can sign up to as a new customer.

I’ve just had mine installed and I’m trying to connect my old ASUs router to my new virgin fiber can anybody assist?

I’m really not sure where I should be putting cable from the new virgin router to the asus I have.

The asus has a Ethernet cable connected straight to my PC so it’s my main source of internet in there so that’s my main concern.

The new router is perfectly fine WiFi wise.

My old Ethernet cable is threaded through the entire house so I cannot extend it :(

Plug the router into the 10Gb port on the Hub 5X, you'll need to put the Asus router into the DMZ on the Hub 5X though or you'll be Double NAT.

No modem mode on Hub 5x, so it can’t be done as you would perhaps expect and should be done. I’m still on the rubbish Hub 5x until VM pull their finger out and allow modem mode. They really should advise this before signing up. I was told it was by the salesperson but it wasn’t.

If you have other options for fibre I would cancel VM and go with them instead, even if a bit more money. Worth it to not have to deal with VM support team and renewals.

Instructions above basically one choice but my understanding is that it results in double NAT, which can cause issues. Google Hub5x modem mode and double nat for more info.

Ignore that if you’re just trying to connect a PC to the Hub5x and use that instead of your existing router. Still, I’m finding some odd things with DNS interception (maybe) with the 5x which are causing issues with internal resources and some websites.

Seems they don't mind telling customers lies as I was told the same and the hub is so useless if I change any settings like add a device to DMZ the internet stops working completely. I have managed to get the wifi signal off and it work but it has stopped working a couple of times.

If you can't plug your PC straight in to the hub the next best thing is turn all wifi and dhcp off the asus router and run another cable from the asus to any of the ethernet ports on the hub, then it will just be acting as a switch.

Does anybody use a mesh system with their VM? I have 1gb with a hub 5 and currently using google wifi but it’s not great and was looking for something a bit sturdier and what offers WiFi 6, what do people recommend?

The suggestion to mount upstairs is because ceiling mounted APs project the signal down and sideways, and very little behind. Also a signal will attenuate a lot less through a floor than through walls.

Alternative to unifi is the TP-Link Omada stuff , I have this, just as stable and cheaper to boot.
