Virgin Media Discussion Thread

I just got the same as you apart from i have 3 boxes.... £80 a month. So yes you could have done better i guess...

Nice not too bad then, I forgot I got an international TV package also. It was always going to be tricky with the TNT sports increase I guess.

It's not great having to do the end of contract dance but it's one of the "joys" of being with Virgin and necessary due to the often very large discounts built into most people's contracts that magically disappear at the end of the contract.

I'm on that same Volt package with 1Gb BB, Netflix, 2 boxes, SkySports, TNTSport, Cinema, Phone etc and just renegotiated mine for £60 a month and still came away with the sense that I could/should have got it for less!

wowsers, never been able to haggle it down that much. Even when I cancel the contract and wait for retentions they don't budge much.

How did you manage it, any tips appreciated.

The 3 P's. Politeness, Perseverance and Prayer. :)

The call back from retentions often now give poor deals in my experience. The best deals tend to come from calling a number like 020 374 6951 when you're in your cancellation period. There are other numbers like this mentioned in the thread but they all take you directly through to Final Retentions as I like to call them. I tend not to accept the first thing they offer and threads like this are useful as to knowing which deals previously people have got because they can usually match them.

Also never been close to £60 p/m and that's without any sports or Netflix. I had to beg over a several months period just to have my hub 4 upgraded to hub 5..
Sounds like what happens to me! and I apply some patience and wait for them to call me back multiple times, they just tell me on the phone nope we can't compete with community fibre and hang up.... don't even bother to try.

The only time I got it down to around 80ish per month was when I took control and went through top cash back and hot uk VM deal link and bypassed VM altogether.

I think its going to be rarer anyone gets it for £60 that is perhaps the best case pricing if ever, especially with btsports price increase and with everything going up.

Totally agree. I am literally only staying with them because of the volt benefits and the fact the fibre connection has been great for me to date.

Yup, a good 2-3 years ago the fibre was pants but its become stable and 1gig is awesome. If you price up the complete package with say sky or fibre company its easily hitting £140-160 per month.

VM have installed a couple of new smaller green cabinets round the corner and, judging by BIDB, are scheduled to do so next to my cabinet next week.

Looks like the XGS-PON deployment has finally arrived.

Ok opinions please on virgin broadband! Is it reliable? What’s the service like etc ? I’m changing early jan it’s going be either Lila connect or virgin ,am trying to get a good idea off peoples thoughts , I intend to use my own router as well I know I can do that with both providers , I do gaming as well as the usual stuff ! Thanks for any replies

It depends, some areas are absolutely fine and others not so much. You can use https://bidb.uk/ to see if you would be on HFC, FTTP or the new full fibre. If you are on HFC or in a busy areas you are more likely to get issues.

New green cabinet being installed next to my existing beige one right now :)

Anyone got any ideas how long after deployment of these things I could expect XGS-PON services to become available?
I'm not naïve and expect it to be a good while tbh.

Honestly, it's a lottery. I've been with VM for 23 years (no viable alternatives here) and overall they've been really good for me but I do appreciate that many others have had poor service and rage about them.

If you have the nerve, maybe stroll down your street, spot anyone already on VM (tell-tale box on the house usually) and knock the door and ask them :)

I feel like community fibre has exploded and killed Virgin. They are no longer the best option for high speed and nothing else with VM is good - latency, customer support etc. Virgin were 100% the option here in Stockport and now it’s community fibre with symmetrical 2gb/2gb options available for £55 a month which is miles better than anything VM can offer.

I did exactly that a few years back and it was pointless as the four potential future neighbours I asked didn't really know how good or bad their service actually was.

In the end when I moved in I found serious congestion and single connection speed issues. A few years later and eventually the issues were fixed and now the service is fine, although I now also have two other ISP services that have arrived in the area in the last few years and I use them in a balanced/failover mode with VM so I am no longer impacted by a single provider thankfully.
