Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Speedtest showing 678 down and 110 up. I had not heard of Nperf so got 790 down and 111 up.

Which port are you plugged into on the router? The Hub5x has one 10Gbps port and the others are 1Gbps. To get the 1100Mbps you’ll need the former (and the kit on PC side too). But would still expect to see higher numbers with a gigabit NIC. Maybe reset your network settings and check for LAN driver updates. Obviously close other programs and background tasks if you can. You’ll never see a full 1Gbps on the LAN due to overheads but it should be closer than that.

Thanks for all the help. Yes plugged into the correct router port, using Cat 6 cable to computer 1gb ethernet port. All drivers are the latest.

Tried another cable?

I’m not a windows expert any more but assuming you’re using that, could be some OS issue. Several results on DuckDuckGo suggest for Windows 10/11 you can try:

Code:
netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=normal

There are other commands for resetting the network stack, you may want to try that too.

I also found going to Gigabit I was finding new bottlenecks in my system storage with downloads, but I expect a speedtest shouldn’t be impacted by that.

My Virgin 1gb and 5x router were installed today. Installation went well and everything was completed clean and tidy.

However checking the speed on Sam Knows my Router shows 1100mbs download as expected. However all day my wired connection direct to my pc's 1gb ethernet is fluctuating 450mbps and 750mbps. Not the full 1GB I was expecting. Im using Cat 6 cable from router to PC.

Is there a period of time after install when things need to be configured at Virgins end or is this poor?

Got the same myself. My previous M350 volted to 500 was quicker

Come out of contract and my 1Gig deal was hiked right up.
Just been onto the customer support for about 2 hours, and I've got a deal for 18 months of 1 gig for £36.44
Just out of interest as I hear about the length of time people have to spend on the phone to them. Is it because you’re a in a queue? Or do they literally mess people about on the phone for 2 hours?

I did it on the online support.
It was a long time wait, plus a long time interacting through the chat box, as they often took a few minutes to reply each time - I guess they were supporting a few people at the same time. I don't mind it that way, as it means I can do soemthing else at the same time - eg OCUK forums :D

Just managed to get my 250mb broadband only down to 21.39 a month (was on £35!). Was tempted by the 500mb but didn't want to switch to a hub which didn't have modem-only.

Openreach planner currently says fibre coming by end of 2025 so this should tide me over until we get it.

It's only the full fibre (which is 2 Gbps capable) which has the hub which doesn't support modem only mode. If it's HFC or the 'in between' fibre/coax, every hub supports modem only mode.

Just signed up again with the M500 for £28 with 3 months free + £25 cashback. Works out at under £22 a month for 1gb with a £7 O2 sim.

Already not looking forward to cancelling it in 18 months time.

I'm coming to the end of my contract and put in my cancellation because the price was going up from £32 to £76 a month for M350 with Freeview. The best they could do on the phone was £45, then £40, so I said no thanks.

That was 2 days ago.

Retentions called and offered £41 (the best they could do). When I said that wasn't good enough, they offered £39 (again, "the best they could do"). When I said that was still more for the same, they offered (£39 with a £50 credit - again "The best they can do"). So I declined the offer. Maybe they'll call again? Anyone know?

I'd rather not move as it's a faff, but I will (or just sign up my wife instead onto a new customer deal).
