Virgin Media Discussion Thread

VM wouldn't even do the usual retention calls if they know Community Fibre has offered a deal. Thats what happened with my contract. Been with VM for over 15 years(since NTL days) and I have been unhappy about all the broken promises and contract differences they have including the mid contract price hikes. When CM offered services in my street I got the 1Gb symmetrical up and down for less than what I was paying for VM 1Gig volt BB but with 100 Mb upload speeds.
I was apprehensive at first because of CGNAT and having to run FTTP cables overhead - but the whole process was smooth and I don't have any issues which I was nervous about + better upload speeds and lower latency!
VM did call me once to know why I am leaving but as soon as I said CM offered me a deal they just abruptly ended the call and hung up.

I feel like community fibre has exploded and killed Virgin. They are no longer the best option for high speed and nothing else with VM is good - latency, customer support etc. Virgin were 100% the option here in Stockport and now it’s community fibre with symmetrical 2gb/2gb options available for £55 a month which is miles better than anything VM can offer.

Unfortunately they're the only option for me. No fibre and no plans for any in the foreseeable future, despite living in the urban sprawl :(

Do you mean CityFibre? Community Fibre only operate in London and don't have a 2Gb service.

Improved reliability as water in cabinets doesn't affect fibre, and noise can't be injected into your segment from someone's faulty equipment.

You can already buy ONTs if you want from lots of sources, the main thing is picking a model that can be configured to work on the VM network and knowing what values to use.

I just worry for the additional outlay it will randomly become a brick one day at VM’s whim. I wish they would just allow it until modem mode is here or just sort out modem mode. The delays/silence/lies just sucks for anyone who wants to use their own router.

Any examples you know of?

I’ve not managed to find any confirmed long term solutions so far!

Sorry, should have said I’d discounted that particular one on needing something with SFP support to plug it into. Still might try the TPLink option, as it’ll be a wedge cheaper and no great loss if it doesn’t work.

Unless someone has confirmation that you can change the serial number on them then it won't work
Worked out as much after reading through a few things online earlier.

Oh well, OpenReach actually pulling through in the next few months, so at least I’ll be able to go for an ISP where I’ll be able to use my own hardware (and who hopefully don’t have shocking customer support, line VM).

Thanks for the pointers though, much appreciated.

We are getting Virgin media broadband / TV / phone package installed tomorrow.

Do we need to have a TV there for them to test it or do they just install nowadays, with their own equipment?

Absolutely nothing in my emails / texts to say we need to do anything - its an empty house currently

My Virgin 1gb and 5x router were installed today. Installation went well and everything was completed clean and tidy.

However checking the speed on Sam Knows my Router shows 1100mbs download as expected. However all day my wired connection direct to my pc's 1gb ethernet is fluctuating 450mbps and 750mbps. Not the full 1GB I was expecting. Im using Cat 6 cable from router to PC.

Is there a period of time after install when things need to be configured at Virgins end or is this poor?
