Virgin Media Discussion Thread

its 100mb fttp and up to 80mb fttc when they roll it out, u can order 100mb fttp on bt infinity site now if ya can get it.

Ah ok. Fair enough then :)

The technician who came to check my connection is hassling the network manager to get this fixed for me. It's so damn regular, they should be able to find it soon.

Only problem is, the noise starts about 20:30 usually, and stops around 01:00 or so. So bet they will be lazy when they check it.

Had a call from a VM representative yesterday stating the "big fix" isn't going to be in place until january but I have been credited 3 months intarwebs moniesso it's not all bad.

Well actually it is pretty bad, also found out Infinity isn't coming to my exchange until December 2012 which is a joke!

The Virgin engineer arrived this morning ready to replace the cable, should be done by the end of today he reckons, has to come back later though as the cable itself hasn't been delivered.

Sadly though he seems to think that the issue is with the kit in the cabinet and not my cable, contradicting what another engineer said. We will have to wait and see, but BT Infinity/ADSL24 FTTC is looking much more appealing as time goes on.

Well my new 100mb connection was good for a few days, after the engineer fitted a attenuator and swapped my not-so-super, super hub over.

Anyway 2 days later and more of the same crap packet loss!

I logged onto my Superhub and disabled the "router" and just enabled it as a modem.

I then plugged my own Netgear WNDR3700 router in and packet loss has been zero for nearly a week now :)

In Feb 09 I moved house and when virgin came to install the engineer said they provide the 655's but he said they were rubbish and suggested I continue to use my own Linksys WRT router which was much better.

Shortly after that I know VM stopped using the Dlink routers totally.

Interesting, however I've had no issues at all with mine, as I said, my crud connection has been directly linked to the TiVo installation.

I'll see what it's like after the cable is changed today, I've been on nights so I need to catch up with BF3!

Did you try disabling the ping flood feature or whatever it is called on the superhub?

Really? I bought it as I read it's meant to be great? It's been fine for me, up till the point when TiVo was installed.

just installed this custom firmware and all my wireless probs have gone and its been great, the 615 is supplied with v1.0 VG (virgin Group) which disables a lot of the features but its a great router unlocked.

http://www.dd-wrt.com

Firmware: DD-WRT v24-sp2 (11/21/10) std
Time: 12:30:18 up 1 day, 26 min, load average: 0.00, 0.03, 0.00
WAN IP: 94.174.xxx.xxx

Can I ask, how do you go about installing this firmware for the 615?

As far as I'm aware, you can't put this on the DIR 655. I've not had any issues with the router anyway.

Well, spoke to the technician again this morning. The network manager seems to think it's someone who is using about 85% of the available bandwidth on downloads. Totally destroying the network.

Hoping they can move us onto a different mux to get away from it. Not sure yet what will happen :(

Go to there homepage, search for your router, type 615 in the search, check your hardware revision of your device. Mine was D2 then down load the firmware and update via the web interface of the netgear default site 192.168.0.1. After updating the ip address of the device changes to 192.168.1.1. Mines been great since the upgrade so very happy.

Now that we can use the Virgin Super Hub in modem mode, it's time to get a decent router.

My requirements are as follows:
  • Separate wifi for 2.4ghz/5ghz
  • Good/Stable wireless performance, for music/video/file transfer and streaming. (Mainly for ATV2, PLex and Squeezebox)
  • Gigabit ports
  • Some kind of Dynamic DNS Support, so I can update my IP address at DNSSimple (even if just the ability to run a small bash script so I can use the DNSSimple API)
  • Basic VPN would be a plus, but not essential.

I'm looking at The Buffalo wzr-hp-ag300h, the Netgear wndr4000-n750 or the Netgear wndr3800-n600

I was quite set on the buffalo as it's 'the older brother' of the WHR-HP-G300NH which had rave reviews, but looking at the conclusion at small net builder it seems to only have average wifi performance. Is this average by their standards, but miles better than the superhub kind of quality or average by everyone's standards? It's really difficult to choose a router, so if someone could give me a helping hand that would be great. It doesn't have to be one from that list.

im also looking to do this as the wireless range is diabolical on the superhub. So ill also keep my eye on this thread:)
