Virgin Media Discussion Thread

try to do a ping to tf2.trashedgamers.com

It's a TF2 gaming community located in NJ, USA. I always get around 100ms and it's a good way to judge how the ISP perfomrs locally due to differences between the ISPs.
A friend on VM (previously NTL) gets 15ms higher than I do.

20Mb Virgin media.

I just ordered 50 meg to upgrade my 20, works out at £15 more a month and considering i pay £22 for 20 meg it means only £37 for 50meg happy with that, on the charges i just got a connection charge of £20 nothing else i recall reading about a £50 fee but he said only £20.

£37 is more like it. I'd happily pay that for 50mb. Is that JUST broadband you've got, or part of a bigger bundle. I have no interest whatsoever in TV/Phone.

How did you wangle that deal?

Its mainly due to the deal i had previously running i had 2 V+ boxes, 1 standard, XL tv & Phone and XL broadband for £65 a month when i signed up to Virgin, the 20 meg in that deal cost £22 a month so its costing me a extra £15 a month for 50 meg so means am paying £37 in total for the broadband.

virgin are really leading the way in high speed internet. I'm quite happy with my 8Mb connection with o2 at the moment. What do you guys do with your 20Mb connections??

Linux distros, lots and lots of linux distros ;)

Yes Virgin do seem head and shoulders above everyone else at the moment, I remember reading about some providers putting cables through the sewers. Hopefully with some government backing and that scheme taking off well a lot of areas could really get some super fast internet. For a country that seems to be at the forefront for most things in the world we seem to lag behind on the internet front. Countries like Sweden and some Asian countries like Singapore have had these kind of connections for years now.

ohhh u have a premium account with Rapidshare. thats why u get full speed. i don't have a have a premium account, hehehe

Find it comes in handy, back when I used to patch my copy of Pro evo everything was on rapidshare and used to

I think when the 50Mb connection is available in my area I will just cancel my account then sign up again for the £45 package, L tv, M phone and 50Mb broadband.

Although they may just give me that deal anyway.

Bethere.co.uk Unlimited package.

I just secured XL everything for £52 which i'm pretty happy with. Wanted the 50mb but i couldn't justify the extra cost. Upgrading from 10 to 20 should be fine tbh.

Quite funny, been paying £63/month for 10mb, L phone and XL tv... same package for new customers is £38! It's funny if you dont keep tabs on what you're paying, you really could be paying over the odds. They brought it down to £44 for me, but then i upgraded from 10mb to 20mb, and increased the phone package.

Still, saving £120 a year for doubling my BB speeds. Nais.

Yeah we had something similar.. phone line, bb (10mb), V+ box, addition V box, sports channels etc. Swapped to VIP package which saved a few quid but also gave the call package, so get free/reduced calls and 20mbit.

Yeah. They offered us the V+ box for free (monthly), with a £49 installation fee. Havent got the spare cash atm so it'll have to wait. I told them sky were installing Sky+ for free, (not that i have a BT phoneline anyway, and who can be arsed to deal with Openreach :/) but they wouldn't budge on that. Meh, i did well enough.

Shame it took 6 years to notice i was being ripped off though ;) still, my own fault!

Had my install on Friday and found i was the first in my area to have it, had some issues to start with mind because of that, they came in the morning at 8.30 and found the modem wouldn't hold sync, then found out the company that put the new equipment in didn't do something on mine they should have, but to there credit they worked on the issue and it came on 9pm that night.

So far its been great 6.2mb/s is the best i had everything feels faster as you would expect, well pleased so far here is a speedtest result i took last night.

i've been having afew problems with my 50Mb, the last 3 days the speed as been down to 27-30Mb on my main pc since netgear technical service did a Remote Management to the router (to try to fix my wireless speed problem, which still isn't fixed yet). now today the speed as gone up to 50-53Mb.

could is traffic management now be on the 50Mb?

Could be anything, including the 100 programs you have running in the taskbar :p
:p.... on friday and sunday i tryed closeing all background tasks/apps but it didn't help.

as u see above its back to 50Mb today even with everything still running.

no idea what happened...
