Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Not on 50mb but 30mb just thought i would post this so im not left out :p

End bit is just me downloading somit full speed for a bit and uploading.

The engineers turned up yesterday to change the cable. No idea if they've done it or not, but the connection last night miles better than normal so maybe they have? I'm currently on hold to find out, and also try and get some form of credit. If it's fixed, then hurrah!

They haven't.

Rescheduled date on the 05 Feb.

Not impressed.

I too have been told Feb. I don't know how they dare.

Reference a credit on your bill, I pay £35 just for 50MB (no TV or phone). Theyve reduced it to £20...whoopie doo, considering its unusable 80% of the time the credit doesnt reflect that.

I spoke to Virgin and they say there is 74% high utilisation in my area, and work is planned to repair it. Don't know why they couldn't tell me this 2 months ago. Cable is being replaced anyway.

Graph has looked like this the past two nights, so maybe something's been done, though the fix date is still 7 Feb. Either way, I'm happy, gaming is now possible albeit still with sporadic ping and browsing has much improved.

New cable pull booked for the 11 Jan. £26 credited to my account for degraded service, I was expecting a little more.

Mine has improved as well since Thursday.

Not perfect, but miles better than it was and I actually managed to play BF3 last night with only a 2 minute period of rubber banding instead of the whole evening.

I've had a reasonable couple of days, I'm guessing all the students have started going home for Christmas and not that VM have actually fixed anything.

noob question, this was probably answered before, but this thread is 105+ pages so sorry I have to be annoying and ask again.

On virgin's website they state that

49.54Mb is what our customers typically get

So, I'm trying to work out the actual speeds I would get when downloading stuff. Am I right in thinking that the lowercase b means bits and not bytes, there are 8 bits to a byte, so the actual max downloads speed I'd get is

49.54 / 8 = 6.19 MEGABYTES PER SECOND!!!!!!!

Fastest I've ever got and get it most times is 5.99/6.00mb a sec, more that fast enough.

damn, that's impressive. when I first ggot my 8 meg I thought that was blindinly fast, and now when I download a 1.4GB file and it takes me 30 minutes I get very impatient..

the virgin is probably out of my price range tbh, I had too many bad experiences with changing phone lines so I have to stick to BT, and the 50meg without a virgion phone line is £35 a month plus connection fee.

I can get 20meg with o2 for £20 which is more sensible, as I don't think I'll be maxing out my internet that much.

What's your max upload speed on virgin? I do upload videos on youtube and stuff a lot so upload speed is more important for me.
