Virgin Media Discussion Thread

30Mb --> 60Mb for no further charge, nice!

it is kinda great but, I just spent the best part of last year waiting for ahardware upgrade and re segmentation so i could actually use my 30mbit connection.... then a few moths later they pull this and ill be back at square one.

Won't your current hardware support 60 though? It should surely.

I will probably have to ditch the VMNG300 modem only I requested last year as it turns out the modem only supports a max of 4 bonding channels downstream whereas the superhub supports up to 8 and VM will be using more than 4 across the board.

At least now the hubs have the modem only option firmware fully released unlike last year I guess...

So now rather than being unable to receive 30mb during peak hours I'll be unable to receive 60Mb?

Awesome work again Virgin.

Here's a suggestion: Why not make the packages you rolled out in a desperate hope to be top dog last year WORK first, before jacking up speeds again.

No one really needs more than 50Mb, so make your infrastructure capable of 50Mb at all times of the day!!!

I presume there is some wording in the law somewhere that means they can shout about high speeds so long as you receive it for more than half the day? Well 60Mb at 11am and 3am is no good to most people!

Pretty much this TBH. While I am on 50Mb still (Gateshead still "being planned" for upgrade to 100Mb despite many parts of the UK already upgraded), it does suck that the only time one can enjoy such high speeds is when everyone else is eventually asleep. Granted I don't do much downloading in the evenings, but on the odd occasions (Steam in particular), I would love to see my speeds hit max. And yes, I know of how to make Steam utilise full speed now lol :)

I can't even watch 480p youtube in the evening. Let alone do any downloading!

You should see my Speedtest logs. Most of them around 7/8/9pm are less than 1Mb...

Am still due the upload upgrade.

ditto. due april 2012 apparently. no doubt it will be pushed back with this extra work going on. :p 1Mbps up is slower than my old adsl2 connection with BE.

luckily my downloads are always good as my area is not congested in the evenings. :)

For those of you that state you can't hit maximum downloads on say your 50mb packages due to high traffic in the evenings for example, can I ask what speeds you typically get when its busy (d/l & u/l please) as I'm thinking of joining Virgin as we've just had the fibre optic cable installed in our street.

Im currently on 10mb and was contemplating calling up Virgin and seeing how much it is to change to 20mb or something as during peak times the speed slows down to 2mb, although Im not sure if its to do with their 'throttling' if you download over x amount during the day, or just peak usage, but it was starting to really **** me off.

Ive just read about the free upgrade to 20mb so sounds good so far...but are they still gonna throttle it down to 2mb if you go over their download limit which is something silly like 750mb IIRC...?

Also has anyone called them up and got an upgrade date?

Hmmm just ordered 100mb for an extra £8 a month, now find out that it will only get me 20mb extra (100 mb being raised to 120mb, 50-100)

not sure it's worth it to be honest

edit:

then again a usual evening would be

1 person downloading and playing multiplayer via steam
1 person watching vod on iplayer etc
1 person streaming HD movies on Netflix

so an extra 20mb of room might help?!?

Surely it's worth sticking it out with 50meg? Free upgrade to 100 at some point saves you £96 a year. Unless you desperately need it now?

For me, I can frequently get near full speeds even at peak.

The problems I have are related to packet loss & ping... the lag when trying to browse simple websites (even OCUK sometimes) can be a nightmare & it has nothing to do with speed.

That's my personal issue anyway - others do have genuine speed issues.

It's not just the speed difference, it's the traffic management policies.

The new 100mbit policy will throttle speed down when you've downloaded so much over the course of the day.

The 120mbit policy will be like the current 100mbit policy that is not throttled (although there is supposed to be shaping on p2p).

So... if you have 3 people streaming hd movies and downloading in peak hours - you want to be on the top pack or you'll get knocked down to whatever the throttled limit is (25mbit, at a guess).

engineer is booked for tomorrow and i have a 'close' friend who helps out with the cost so it will realistically only be £48 a year extra.

and i'm afraid i'm one of those people that wants everything NOW. i know it's the childish side of me that wants the fastest and best i can (or sometimes cant) afford! this tho is easily on the can afford side so i'm not too worried.

and i pick up files from all over the country on my internet connected NAS so the 12mb upload will be a big help as it will max out most connections of the places i visit

Netflix alone is about 2.5gb an hour so i'll probably be drawing 3-5gb per hour between 6 and 11 most nights of the week. it is very easy to hit the caps at that rate to be honest!
