Virgin Media Discussion Thread

It's not just the speed difference, it's the traffic management policies.

The new 100mbit policy will throttle speed down when you've downloaded so much over the course of the day.

The 120mbit policy will be like the current 100mbit policy that is not throttled (although there is supposed to be shaping on p2p).

Do you have a source for this?

As, as far as I am aware, there is not management on my 50Mbps connection.

The only thing with my current connection and even the 100Mbps is the P2P throttling.

Seems Im late, from feb they will start to double everyone's speed apart from those on 100mb which will get 120mb all limits will be doubled as well.

Anyone know the time frame to be rolled out, as last time this happened it took a while.
Roll on 100mb.

the article say it's to be completed by mid 2013. there are no detailed plans yet.

my area can't get 100MBps even if you want to pay for it.

Just left the cable modem behind. They had to disband to allow the 100mb technicians onto the network as they were hogging the hub with their 200mb gear.

I had to hard wire straight into the new cable modem and none of my gear (router/wifi) could handle the speed. It was pretty insane speed to be honest and no cap.

Postcode checker goes live on Friday, nice! I imagine this area will be among the first hopefully as we're fully 100Mb enabled and most recently updated.

Downloading at 7.4MB/sec is rather mouth watering.

On same boat

For those of you that state you can't hit maximum downloads on say your 50mb packages due to high traffic in the evenings for example, can I ask what speeds you typically get when its busy (d/l & u/l please) as I'm thinking of joining Virgin as we've just had the fibre optic cable installed in our street.

Hi Space Monkey,
I'm due for engineer visit on monday the 16th for 100Mbps install.
So I've been looking around the net too for last few weeks. And it seems to me a lot of the problem is due to rubbish Super Hub lol...
If you can hold on for say another 5 days I can give you a update on line quality and speed of a new installation.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but a lot of the problem we hear are from continuing customer with recent speed increase or hardware change.
And if you go ahead with order don't forget £142 cashback with Quidco.
Cheers :D

No. All free upgrades require a Superhub, they aren't supporting multiple modems anymore - you need a Superhub because none of the existing modems support 8 simultaneous downstream channels, which is what the upgrade will be doing.

Hi mate,

Thanks for the info, please do report back your experiences, are you going for a full package or just broadband?

I'm going to have to make the decision soon as the quidco cashback runs out in a couple of days

Is there a better router/modem thats available to buy if the 'SuperHub' isn't so great?

:)

unless you're in the same area, it's pointless waiting/asking for other people's experiences. search your postcode/town on the virginmedia forums and cableforum to see if it's over utilised or not. before i signed up a few weeks back, i couldn't find anything bad for my area so i took the plunge. it's been great for me so far. but some areas are absolutely terrible and shouldn't be touched with a bargepole. you really do need to research this.
