Virgin Media Discussion Thread

FWIW I was on the 50Meg for two years. Dropped down to 30meg and saved £20 a month and tbh cannot tell any practical difference. Of course, you lose the 5 Meg upstream when you do this. But for me, working from home 80% of the time, downloading, gaming etc, etc, cannot really tell any *practical* difference.

30Meg/sec is a LOT of bandwidth.....

Your mileage may vary...

31.4GB took me 2hrs 50mins so on 60Mb that will be 1hrs 25, quite a massive difference in timing :p

Why? They aren't just ramping everyone up on the existing network, they are completely overhauling it on a hardware level.

Umm if you can get 100mbit in your area and have the new upload speeds 3/5/10mbit then you are already overhauled. As far as im aware most of the country is now looking at the upgrade schedules.

Scrapping the old 10 and 20mbit product is freeing up more channels and frequencies for docsis 3, i guess the 110million is all going into replacing that hardware and then doing segmentation work as and when its needed.

My area was re segmented in November (6 months after the issue was identified) and already the average latency has gone up 5ms and the jitter is as bas as it ever was under NTL/VM.

Ive seen this twice before 4mbit to 10 and 20mbit role out. Both times a couple of months down the line it turns to complete crap and it takes months for them to carry out any work to increase capacity again.

After dealing with their total incompetence and bare faced lying for months I have no love for VM and if an alternative were available i would be gone. ADSL isn't viable my exchange is nearly 2km away (7mbit). FTTC/P still isn't planned to my address, probably because VM has dominance in this area already.

I hope they prove me wrong, so wrong in fact i have to apologise and look a total eggface but somehow i think i wont be.

Come spend a few million of that budget in Poplar NE/E London get rid of the C&W/NTL legacy.

Just used the postcode checker to find out when I'm being upgraded from 50MB to 100MB. Says April to June :D Good times :D Will I need a new router when upgrading from 50MB to 100MB?

i think i've missed the link for the upgrade checker?

oh and here's my new stats on the 100mb (i turned ip flood detection off at about 11pm)

in your area between October and June 2013 and going as fast as they can.

roflmao... hopefully FTTC will be here by then

Doesnt mean you get double speed straight away tho he could theoretically have to wait until the end of the year for the free speed increase from 50 to 100.

Just got this Email from Virgin:

We'll also be lowering the price of your broadband package in April to match the price of our 50Mb Broadband XXL packages. [/FONT]

No, it means that those on 50mb get put onto 100mb and thats it, then those on 100mb get put onto 120mb and then the price drops to the price of the 50mb packages :)
