Virgin Media Discussion Thread

I'm getting the impression that wireless N routers are worse at transmitting through brick walls. In my living room I get 48-50Mbps whilst downstairs I get around 10Mbps..

lucky you theres SNR and FEC errors at my location so im getting this

And browsing is terrible

I called to ask customer services about upgrading my mum's account. She's been with them since the early Telewest days and currently has XL/20Mbps and XL phone. Customer services said it'd be £45 a month for the broadband plus the phone, which didn't even tally with the prices on their site (ignoring completely the new customer prices, which are even lower at £28 per month).

She said they can't help so put us through to retentions, who said the same thing. They can't upgrade us without charging the full install fee of £60 plus £45 a month. The guy even admitted she'd be better off with BT for the phone as they're a lot cheaper lol

He was nice enough to suggest sales might be able to sort something, so finally the lady in sales agreed to offer free install and an upgrade to XXL/50Mbps at no extra charge. That only happened because the guy in retentions argued that she IS a new customer... of 50 meg broadband lol We even managed to make it so she didn't need to start a new 12 month contract!

Got there in the end, and it shows that you should stick to your guns and keep asking. The install's set for 14th October now. :)

Finally got my 50mb sorted (from 20mb) after a few calls - £60.50 for:
XXL BB
XL TV
normal box / phone (install date 10th oct)

Not the greatest of deals but hey ho... relieved to not have to try and talk to their monkeys any more!

just had mine installed and the netgear wn2000 is a joke it's like using 56k when used not a happy bunny here

The guy has all the routers in his van, He tried to fob me off with the netgear but I kicked up a fuss and he ran down to his van and got the d-link.

even though i'm still waiting for it to be installed as the modem won't sync.

Finally, got my 50mb installed this morning

The engineer was supposed to fit it last friday along with the TV and Phone. But after doing those two, told me that a separate guy would do the 50mb install a bit later in the day.

Needless to say he never turned up.

I was stranded without internet for a day, because the muppets at Virgin had switched the service without giving me the 50mb needed to make it work. (They switched it back after that, so I have had the normal 20mb for a couple of days)

It has taken 8 phone calls, and over 2 hours on the phone to get them over here today.

They really are quite shambolic.

Nevertheless, have to say that 50mb broadband is a bit more like it :-)

I always assumed 20mb would be like this, but it always felt quite sluggish to me. And I am not talking about downloading files. But rather the speed that webpages load.

50mb is noticeably faster at loading every website. It really is a very worthwhile upgrade, even if you are already on the 20mb.

Speed seems to be between 42 and 47mb for downloads. 1.5 mb for uploads. That is with the D-Link.

I genuinely think that this is fast enough (for downloads anyway - the upload speed could do with a boost)

My internet connection now feels like it can keep up with my SSD hard drive :-)

mines terrible web browsing is like 56k pages take about 30 seconds to load with or without using router
i get between 400-600 kB/sec on virgin media usenet servers as it stands not willing to pay for this at all

im getting ever so closer to getting virgin media, not sure if to start off with the 20mb, see if that does my needs for a few months, and then upgrade to the 50mb
cos lets face it, 1.4mb on adsl for the same price as virgin media (not including tv here) is a no brainer :(

here's my london 50mb service @ 02:29 am

and it's not even 16mb I am getting around 560kB/sec which about a 4mb connection right ?
If you are on 20mb my advice is stay there the network clearly isn't sorted out properly for 50mb yet.

Are any Edinburgh users here got 50Mb, I'm thinking of getting it, if it's worth the extra £8 pound over and above the 20Mb package. I'm on the Large (10Mb) just now costing £25.

Don't forget to claim your £10 for a no show.
