Getting 50MB installon on wednesday. Is the D-Link the better router to ask for? Also - I'm wanting the router and Modem installed in a cupboard under the stairs - Would the engineer agree to this? Not quite sure how he would put cable under the floor :/

Had my 50mb installed last week. Downloads at a constant 6.1mb/s any time of the day. Can't fault it, it's fantastic! I don't trust speed test results, i done one and it said 35mb yet once i started a download it went straight to 6.1mb/s! :) i found the bbmax speed test site usually gets results showing my 50mb connection.

He'd expect you to get the floorboards up for him i would expect. The last VM engineer that came to my house left me about 30 metres of cable so that i could move my modem into another room without paying £75 for the privilege

here's my london 50mb service @ 02:29 am

and it's not even 16mb I am getting around 560kB/sec which about a 4mb connection right ?
If you are on 20mb my advice is stay there the network clearly isn't sorted out properly for 50mb yet.

Have you not been throttled? Or is it like that all the time? (I know the supposedly 'dont', but do you believe them?)

Im on 20mb, and am hard pressed to find anywhere on tinternet that I can get more than 1mb/s never mind max my connection.

50mb is an unlimited non stm'd service I just think theres issues in my ubr or area.
Btw did anyone that upgrade get a wireless n dongle ? we didn't get one

Virgin are so annoying.

Currently getting L TV and phone and XL BB for £45 p/m. I'm not in contract with them anymore so phoned up and they offered:

XXL BB
XL TV
XL Phone

£66 p/m with no installation fee's and free V+ Box. I said I'd think about it.

Rang back and they offered the same package and price but this time with a £50 installation fee. The woman saying they can't do it without charging it and there's no way around it

So I cancelled.... cba with their BS.

You should get a D-Link DWA-140
give VM a call and they will send you one.

That's a good idea. I'll never get the floor boards up in time for him, so will try and flag some cable off him. Fingers crossed!

Do you get a free dongle with all 50MB packages?!

Mine got activated today... The engineer forgot to install my phone line and forgot to give me the USB wireless stick. All he did was unplug my old modem, unwrap and plug in the new modem and make a phone call. Easy job huh.

Internet works fine I guess. Downloading from Astraweb at 5100kb/s, though I should be getting faster speeds shouldn't I?

I'll call them tomorrow about the phone line and stuff.

not if its between 4pm/9pm?

if your getting 5000kbits im assuming your on a 20mb connection with virgin, if you are, then yeah, they reduce the speed by 75% so everyone has a fair connection during peak times

I didn't think he was being pedantic because there's option to rip his spelling and grammar apart, internet stylee. I was getting 2400KB/s on my 20mb connection, 50mb should have been more than double the speed surely? I guess it's because there's a much higher overhead on 50 meg?

When I called up virgin to see how much they give me 50mb + my current TV and Phone, on which I have a £20 loyalty discount, but if I upgrade or downgrade because I dont want the TV package anymore, they charge extra. :S
Ok so they should charge extra for 50mb but not £40 more? From 20mb
and an extra £15 for a downgrade on my tv package....

Well you are getting more than double the speed!

2400x2=4800 yes? So your getting another 800 on top of that. In the ideal world 50 000 (kb / s) = 6250 kB / s, but yes theres overheads on top. 5600kB/s is pretty good going i'd say!
