Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Posted a couple of times in here recently about the dismal performance our 60Mb package is giving us; we can't watch any forms of sport/streaming now and download speeds are extremely erratic and often very slow! Someone on the Virgin support forum has just got back to me:

Any reasons for causing this? In fact, what does this even mean? The only thing that *may* have coincided with the timeline is my crypto mining but surely an internet connection can handle a low bandwidth task like that 24/7?

It means a techy has to visit generally. Sometimes you can fix it yourself with an attenuator to adjust the power level on the coaxial, but if it says it is changing then it sounds more like you need a re-pull of the cable to you kerb or green cab.

If you're using the Superhub as a router if you go to 192.168.0.1 and then click router status at the top right and then click the downstream or upstream tabs you'll get results that look similar to the following.

If you post them up we can see what your power levels look like.

My internet started dropping out yesterday, pretty annoying since I was playing, Diablo 3 and due to it's online only, you lose all progress. Today it's having the same issue so I phoned VM and they suggest it's my Superhub, so I have an Engi coming tomorrow morning and I hope I can get a Superhub 2 out of it ;)

Thanks for the replies guys :)

It's in modem mode, I tried to access it using Teamviewer yesterday but I have forgotten the password so may need to reset when I am next home. I will get an engineer booked.

Right im having a bit trouble with my net, i suspect its the power levels, what do you guys reckon (SH2 120mb)

Keeps dropping connection, streaming is hit and miss too.

Power levels look fine to me. Checked the service status to see if there's any work going on?

Yea nothing showing up, rang VM out of interest, they said the power levels are a little high and could cause the issue lol tech coming out tomorrow, probably to install one of those attenuator thingies.

They mean your upstream. The downstream power levels are virtually bang on (you should be as close to 0 as possible but -7 to +7 is within spec). For the upstream to be changed it involves being moved to a different port in the cab, but it doesn't take long.

Virgin want to do all sorts of tests before calling out an engineer. They say my router isn't supported (SH is in modem mode) despite it working flawlessly for the last few months. What's the bet that after all of these tests, the problem will still be there.

Your maximum video bitrate for Twitch streaming should be around 3500kbps, plus 128kbps audio = 3628kbps

After an hour, this comes out at around 1.6GB

The thresholds for the 120mb XXL package at the moment allow the following:

1 hour = 2250MB
2 hour = 2950MB

I did a 1hr 50m stream, and the total filesize was 2.8GB - I reckon if I'd have continued over the 2 hour mark, I'd have hit the speed reduction, which would have reduced my speed by 65% to 4352Kbps for 2 hours

This is still over the bitrate you'd be using for Twitch (3628 kbps) - so providing you weren't also doing a lot of other uploading, and just streaming to Twitch, you should be mostly OK.

Thanks for your info. I'll be streaming 24 hours each weekend so looks like Virgin is no good for me. :(

All those Post RS errors show there's defo something up and yeah your upstream power is too high.

Can you post up pics of your downstream/upstream page? In modem mode you'll need to open up 192.168.100.1 in your browser, you don't need to log into the superhub itself, just click the router status bit at the top right.

Oh right - yeah I can do that now, one minute.

Just ran a Speedtest; 8ms, 55 Mbps down and 2.79 Mbps up. I'll repeat downstream/upstream when it next misbehaves.
