Virgin Media Discussion Thread

I've just gotten the link via email to upgrade my speed from 30mb to 50mb (free) but you have to "order" it to activate the new speed... does anyone know if this implies contract renewal?

11pm

but for 30Mb and above theres no download traffic management, only upload.

hmm 2 answers ;)

Checked the link and it does say:

Monday to Friday: 4:00PM-11:00PM

Saturday and Sunday: 11:00AM-11:00PM

for 20meg and below it does stress this point:
How do I avoid traffic management?
Save heavy downloads and uploads for overnight, set them running just before bed. Just leave your computer to do it overnight, from 11pm onwards. The best bit is waking up the next morning to find it all done.

So is it 11pm for p2p/usenet or 12pm ?

I discovered I was paying £4 per month more than newcomers would paying after the initial lower 6 months, So they agreed to give me this £4 as a so called loyalty discount for the next 12 months  this means in 12 months they will attempt to put my charge back up to more than the advertised rate for my services. Hmmmmmm

thanks I see looks like virgin want people doing p2p/usenet to schedule 12pm and wake up next morning with everything complete ;)

I got VM 50Mb yesterday, coming from Bethere (Sky) 18Mb.

It's absolutely rapid, and I'm left wondering how to best make use of it. Apart from the obvious downloading speed for usenet etc, is there anything life changing that I can do now I wouldn't have been able to do before?

Not really. 18Mb is a decent connection anyway, downloads will just be faster. General stuff won't really be any different.

Can i phone Virgin up and ask them to boost my speed to 50mb from 30mb as i see they are offering the 50mb now on their deals.
Think 50Mb is the same level as 30Mb after the current speed increase is rolled out. So you may be getting that soon (and new subscribers may be being told that they only get 30Mb for a few months until their area gets the speed upgrade)

Cheers.

Just hope my area isn't affected by any congestion. Neighbours don't seem to complain and one of their mods PMd me and said it's a low utilised area. We shall see.

Asked this on VM's forums. The answer was that yes if you click the button to get upgraded you'll get re-contracted. Automated upgrades do not invoke a contract.

I have been with them since the 90's and get £25 a month off, had it since virgin took over when they lost sky 1 for a few months.

I must have missed out on that one! :(

I also pre-date the Virgin takeover, from the Telewest / Blueyonder days, and still see no reason to change supplier. I just wish they'd treat their loyal customers better, but I guess that's business.

EDIT: Forgot to add my question!

I'm having an SH2 installed tomorrow. Does it do simultaneous dual band wireless? Or am I going to have to stick it in modem mode like my current SH1 and use my separate router?

I decided to ditch Virgin and head back to Sky, 40mb is plenty for me and their TV is much better. This decision was based mostly on VMs appalling customer service, they were infuriating. Sky have just seemed so much more helpful and generally nice. Maybe I just got unlucky with the poor members of staff, but they are the voice/face of the company, so if VM can stick such nasty incompetent people on their phones then screw them.
