Virgin Media Discussion Thread

LOL my router overheated a few times in the last hour.

looking through the vent holes with a torch the heatsink is not even attached one one side so is just hanging off at an angle :O

Anyone know how long it takes VM to activate the 152Mb upgrade on their side?

Its a free upgrade as im on the 120Mb package.....I filled in the form online and ordered it yesterday.

How long does it take before you see increased speeds?

Area Teesside

Should have phoned, it's pretty much instant then. When I did mine I was already speedtesting at 152Mb before the call ended :p

Does anyone have recent opinions of Virgin for online gaming like CS. I read issues with lag and jitter but they are all quite old.

unless someone on this forum has it who lives next door to you then any answer you get will be meaningless.

In East London, other than the odd downtime or hiccup its been fine for 6+ years

just cancelled my sky TV and am now going back to virgin.

deal they have given is brilliant and some new deals on the way.
They're getting Sky Sports 3, 4 & 5 in HD soon. within the next month apparently.

Also i've signed unto Sky Sports season ticket. £150 upfront cost and the fee for sky sports subscription is removed from your bills. Saving of £122 over the year.
My deal is:
TV XL
Sky Sports
Sky HD
Tivo 1gb
Multi Room
100mb Broadband
M Phone

£59.99pm. not bad at all tbh

Just upgrade our package to "Big Kahuna" (everything the same as before but 152Mb broadband instead of 60-about-to-be-100Mb + an extra VHD box and its £8/month cheaper!). According to the MyVM page "You've been supercharged!" ... however speedtest is still showin ~60Mb. I've got a SuperHub2 in modem mode connecting up to an RT-N56U router - any reason why I shouldn't be getting full speed? (remember when we upgraded from 20Mb to 60Mb I had to upgrade the router because previous one could only manage ~35-40Mb throughput).
Will probably have to rewire up to the SH2 in router mode to see if what speed I get there before tackling VM if there's still a problem (I suspect the usual "forgot to enable the speed upgrade" sort of problem!)

This happened to me, swtich off and unplug your Superhub for 5 minutes then switch it back on. You should get full speed then.

Just Upgraded mine...

Speed problems here in Coventry as well. Looks like quite a few people are having problems judging by the threads on the VM community forum.

Usual Virgin n00b question guys - May be moving to a new flat where I can finally emerge from the broadband dark ages and I feel like doing it properly with Virgins top package. Told me I can get 152mb, which is a substantial step up from the 10 I've had for the past 5 years. However the stories of the service quality being very location dependent are worrying - Despite my current Sky broadband not being the pokiest, it is at least (like the Be service I had before it) very reliable. I'd be surprised if I could count on one hand the days it hasn't worked.

From the new postcode it looks like I have access to every type of fibre service too so I'd rather have a stable 80mb service than a flaky 152mb if that's the solution.

So is there somewhere I can find out what the general quality is like for a given area? Are there any particular indicators I need to look out for?

Sky could also be rubbish on your new house. There's plenty of people who have bad conenctions with all fiber/cable providers. Virgin are overall no worse than anyone else in my experience.

To compare actual speeds obtained by users go to this website: http://maps.thinkbroadband.com

Enable "Speed Test Results" in the left column, punch in your new postcode. This figures it gives are averages of submitted speed tests so click on a few flags near your house to see what minimum and maximum people are getting and how recently.

That's a great little website, cheers. Looks like the average speeds are one of the highest for the area which is a good start, but I guess it doesn't stipulate which packages people are on.

I was recently looking for a new provider after having a nightmare with Sky.

Sky have the worst customer service known to man in my opinion. Was thinking of Talk Talk but apparently their customer service is also dire.

Virgin and Sky throttle speeds at peak times as far as I know. Went with BT in the end.
Had a few teething problems to start with but their customer support is excellent.

76 Meg download speeds and no Traffic Management or throttling. Happy customer.
