Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Well I had been asking on this forum for a recommended router for 20MB to 50MB Virgin Media broadband, but got no firm recommendations with reasons.

look at my first link, it has reviews on lots of different routers, from that im sure you could pick one, and guides on how to set your router up for the best performance.

but it also depends on your circumstances and what you use the router for.

if your going to be connecting using wireless to your router then i would recommend getting a better router. if your going to be connecting by ethernet, the router is fine so long as you put dd-wrt on it.

if your using your internet connection to download torrents, or use a lot of peer to peer software, then get a better router, if you just use it to email and browse the internet then keep the router.

Does this sound right to you?
-XXL BB
-M TV
-XL Phone

They quoted me £47. I'm sure thats £2 more expensive than a new customer - but thats not the point, I called retentions/cancellations to get a better deal and they're offering me a deal £2 more expenive then it is to buy it through their website!

I've seen a cashback deal, does anyone know if I cancel my sub and get someone else in the household to sign up with that deal will work? Anyone know their T&C's with this?

So eager to get 50mb, but can't bring myself to upgrade due to them attemtping to rip me off :(

Any advice guys?

How easy is it to put dd-wrt on the 615? I have two and may set one us as a bridge to extend coverage in the future. Looks to be quite a few different revisions of the router too...

the router is very crap.

this page shows how many maximum connections it can handle. (these are the connections you make when using torrents and peer to peer software)

http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/component/option,com_chart/Itemid,189/chart,124/

200 is the software limit when they test, so any router that hits 200 in the test can probably do more.

the D-Link 615 gets a score of 32 putting it the joint 6th worst router they have tested.

i put dd-wrt on my 615 router and use it as a sort of homeplug/wireless repeater following this guide.

http://www.geeksaresexy.net/2007/10/02/how-to-cheap-wireless-for-your-xbox-360/

Well I can't say I put very much trust in that list. I have the netgear WPN824 which is at the very bottom of that list and I can tell you I can connect to many more than 2 peers at a time.

Has no one managed to get a good deal for XXL B/B, XL Telephone, M TV? I can't help but think £47 is too expensive for an existing customer? I'm sure a new customer would get it cheaper according to their bundle maker.

Anyone know what defines a new customer? i.e; a new bill payer, or a new household?

sorry to thread trash, but thought its relevant as its the 50mb I'm after :)

Just had mine installed today, friendly installation technician and faultless performance. Just hammered it for the rest of my Steam collection, 20GB, 6.7mb/s max :D

Im enjoying my 50mb, but ill be damned if the modem is reliable, every 2-3 days i have to reboot the damn thing then everything is normal, if i dont the speed drops to around 20 down 512 up even though the power levels are fine, so its something with the hardware in the modem.

The Dlink 615 is absoloute ****, Its better with the DDWRT firmware on it but seriously buy a new one asap.

It has to be the worst router ive ever owned, and the VM firmware doesnt help 1 bit.

I got a re-pull today and I hope it sorts all my problems out with my 50Mb.
Has anyone seen their tech support forum...what a joke of a place :(

Just out of interest, what's a re-pull?

Its basically the cable from the Green cabs to the house, they pull that out and re-pull a new one to the house from the cab. Mine is booked for next week as its been spliced together 4 times due to me being heavy handed with the spade in the front garden.

I have had mine done now(re-pull), they was supposed to be doing it between 8am-1pm but they turned up at 5.30pm

They did not even test the line so it looks like making a few phone calls and get some money knocked off my bill.

My 50mbit is down, in Kingston Upon Thames. The guy I spoke to was very friendly and explained that it was a network issue and was probably affecting my local area and that they will try and have it sorted within 24 hours.

I have currently set my phone up as a wireless access point so my Dad can check his emails and I can browse OcUK and use MSN :D
