Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Mate just had it installed today, said he was told the activation server is down, so he has no internet....

Great start!

Had mine installed this morning, BUT 20 mins after he has left the house it aint working anymore, been on the phone, all is well their end, we have to wait till tomorrow for another tech to come out and check it all over again. Hardly impressed as it was working while he was here lol 20 mins ago.

Good start, they recon it's the cabling in the house and not the servers being down. So have to take another day of work tomorrow.

What is virgin customer service like? Is a quick phone going to get my account credited with some money?

If you push them you should get something back.

I got a re-pull on the 6th April. I hope this sort things out.
But they have given me 3 months of extra TV and 3 months of only paying £11 and £40 credit to my account :)

Can someone check their Downstream power levels and report back what they are, mine look to be all wrong at -19 across all 4

Those are definitely way out of spec. Here is a list from a VM employee on the CableForum listing appropriate signal levels for 50 meg across all platforms. Get on to tech support and book an engineer visit. :)

I did do, my 50meg was only installed yesterday and was all working fine before the Engineer left then 20 mins later it was fubar'd, apparently someone should be coming out today but im not holding my breath, i had 7 times the engineer was meant to come and install the 50meg this month and failed untill yesterday lol.

If VM have made a appointment with you and they do not turm up then they will give you £10-£20.
And that's each time.

Well it's now working they plugged the cables in the wrong way on a splitter

But now only getting

Will this sort itself out or do I need to phone up and get them to change me to 50mb.

And what's up with my upload :(, It's making web browsing very sluggish.

Are you on 50Mb?
If so that is very bad, they should not of left you with a conection like that.
Best thing is to call 150 and pick the option "thinking of leaving us" then tell the person your problems and sound ****ed off :)

Engineer just been, it looks like some other monkey from VM moved our cable in the green cabs to a lower power output, hence our dodgy connection, so hes moved it to the high power ones and put a label on the cable "VIP Cust,Do Not Move", got to love paying that little extra. From -19 on the downstream to +7.09. So all is well, and he also booked a Re-Pull, Brand new cable from the house to the green cabs :D his words "part of the service" lol

Yeah 50mb service does seem to be a lot better.
When I phoned up yesterday, they took my details and the bloke was really hard to understand. He said oh you have 50mb BB we have a dedicated team for that I'll transfer you. Got an English bloke I could actually understand.

Well we called up on Thursday past for an upgrade from the 20MB package, engineer has just left. Recieved a D-Link 615 Wireless router and D-Link DWA-140 Wireless N USB Mini Adapter with my new VM 50MB package.
Not tried wireless yet.

Here is what I am getting, Edit I'm in Edinburgh,

the router is very crap.

this page shows how many maximum connections it can handle. (these are the connections you make when using torrents and peer to peer software)

http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/component/option,com_chart/Itemid,189/chart,124/

200 is the software limit when they test, so any router that hits 200 in the test can probably do more.

the D-Link 615 gets a score of 32 putting it the joint 6th worst router they have tested.

i put dd-wrt on my 615 router and use it as a sort of homeplug/wireless repeater following this guide.

Well I had been asking on this forum for a recommended router for 20MB to 50MB Virgin Media broadband, but got no firm recommendations with reasons.
