Virgin Media Discussion Thread

I live in Newcastle upon Tyne and this is my current broadband speed with VM at "20Mbps"

this kind of speed is deplorable. I'm due to move house in July and was considering 50Mbps, but if that's the kind of speed i receive, then i don't think i'll bother. Can anyone in the Newcastle area vouch for VM's 50Mbps service?

I'm from Newcastle and I can say I can't fault the VM subscription on 50Mb service. I regularly get 6.02Mb/sec from newsgroups.

All I can say is that you should try removing the router from your setup if you're using one or try factory resetting the modem.
I can honestly say I wouldn't live in an area that doesn't have a 50Mb Virgin Media service and I work for Sky broadband technical (let the lynching begin) which I can have at a discount.
As another poster said the WNR2000 is problematic and often does cause dropouts and speed degredation.

Is there anyway to tell/find out if your area is oversubscribed?

Best way is to check who's complaining on the newsgroups, that usually gives a half decent clue.

That said, I had no problems at all on the previous year, so it doesn't mean that you won't run into any if it's OK at the start.

hey zumber, thanks for your reply! even if i remove the router and have a direct connection to the modem, my speed will never exceed 7Mbps and 500Kbps upload, with appalling latency. I ditched the WNR2000 router which sucked a big one, and replaced it with an open-source Linksys WRT54G which has tomato firmware on. I've called them at least 8 times complaining about the service, and they said "somebody in your house is probably thrashing bittorrent or iPlayer, i suggest you take it up with them", and then ended the call!

this was not the case, as i was directly connected to the modem myself at the time. i'm a computer science student up here, and none of my housemates are tech-savvy enough to know what bittorrent is or how it works.

Do you happen to live in a student area such as Jesmond or Heaton? I'll be moving to Jesmond come July, and i think i'll probably getting ADSL 20Mbps broadband from Be. It'll work out more expensive than 50Mbps from VM, but i'd rather pay a bit more for less headaches. Moreover, i believe that VMs services are heavily oversubscribed in these areas, as a few of my friends are experiencing a lot of the same problems.

Hmmm, i have to be a VM member already? I wanted to look at my area before i sign up. :)

i recommend be adsl2 over virgin anyday. i am sick and tired of my ssh tunnels on virgin media timing out and just freezing, that never happened on BE :(

regardless of the random loss of service for a few days or upload just randomly dieing. if i can't tunnel through ssh that just simply sucks!

if you don't have to pay the ridiculous BT installation costs for a new copper line then i would def go with BE or one of the other adsl2 providers, get 8 ip addresses while you are at it, just for the sake of it :D

Quite possible that those areas are over subscribed timefalls. I live in Walker which means that all the money they get in this area (IE the dole) goes on cheap cider and imported tobacco.

Got mine installed today, and I am loving the speeds.

Only downside was that one of the engineers stole my doorbell (the chimer was plugged into the mains) and they must have taken it with them when they unplugged their drill :(

I'm going to get a courtesy call from the CEO's Office on Monday, so I will mention it then :)

They still haven't returned my doorbell, but here is my speed test :)

I'm thinking of getting either the 20mb or 50mb service.

I run a couple of servers on my home LAN, and would want to have some ports open for them to be accessed from the Internet. Do they let you configure the Cable modem / router thingy to open the ports up or is it like Sky where its locked down ?

Also is anyone in the Clifton Moor area of York ? If so are they actually able to supply the full 50mb here or is it oversubscribed ?

ta !

On the Sky router, you can open ports and configure port forwarding :p

VM give you the D-Link 615 router, and that is the standard retail router, with no modifications - you can do what you require with it.

Hi all,

I have been without wireless since VM updated our modem, which was VM's excuse for our two month old Asus Router not working well enough, I was wondering if I upgrade for the 20mb package to the 50mb package will I get a free wireless router that works?

My current 20mb connection gives me 5.5mb on average with my PC wired directly to the modem, so could I expect around 12 or 15mb with a 50mb deal?

Hey guys, just put my order in for an upgrade from 20mb to 50mb. quite excited, not sure why i need the extra speed. my Usenet speeds of 2.3mbs has been more than enough. hopefully be hitting the 6mb with the upgrade :D

quite excited. anybody seen any improvements on pings in games from 20mb to 50mb? not that i suffer lag, but its always nice to see better numbers even if they are just e-peen :)

That is what i'd like to know aswell, having a lower ping is always an added bonus, so any opinions on that would be great, thank you
