Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Well that failed, phoned up to pretend to cancel to avoid paying rising costs and they didn't really care and so now my services are being terminated at end of January.

Well just got a call from outbound retentions for an amazing offer.

I currently have after a downgrade a few months ago:
  1. 100MB Broadband
  2. Lowest Phone
  3. XL TV with 1TB Tivo and 1 VHD Box

and was paying 59.99 p/m with previous discounts.

Now I have:

  1. 152MB Broadband
  2. Lowest Phone
  3. XL TV with 1TB Tivo + 1 VHD Box
  4. 6 Months Netflix

all for 29.99 p/m for 12 months if I paid for line rental up front which makes it the equivalent of 42 p/m roughly.

Looks like everyone is leaving just as I am joining, just signed up for Fibre as its my only option in the area.

only the 50Mb as its all my line can handle according to the various check sites

There's no speed checker for VM due to the technology used, if you can receive cable then you can receive ~120/152mb depending on if you're in a supercharged area or not.

AH interesting to know, don't think I will need more than 50 to be honest as its only me that uses the internet. going to be nice going from the normal 12 I have previously recieved

What's the deal now a days with Virgin and Usenet speeds being throttled at peak times?

Do they still limit download speeds at peak times and weekends?

Not me, I'm staying put, although I am annoyed at the price rise. I've had Virgin now for 6 years at my current address, and for 3 yrs at a previous address. I do seem to get an outage about once a year, but that is reasonable for a domestic service. I'm really happy overall with the service.

Usenet and P2P are still shaped on the basis of how much network traffic there is in your area. If the network is busy you get less speed, but there are no longer download thresholdd at which point you get sin-binned with lower speeds for everything for an hour or two.

What about the throttles between 11am-11pm weekends and 4pm - whatever weekdays?

Do they limit the max speed at these times?

That's all gone now except, though throttle on uploads. When BT did their properly "unlimited" marketing, VM was forced (as usual) to follow suit. They kept the traffic shaping on P2P & usenet as a way of enforcing the fair use policy without letting people swamp the network 24/7.

You can find the details here.

I get regular calls from WM asking me to slow down and stop using so much traffic, They claim every month i use more bandwidth than anybody else on my UBR.

I just say no and hang up. Ive found their upload management to be a pain, they slow it to a crawl at peak times.

They are cheeky buggers. Ask what are the limits are they want you to stick to, and I bet they say they can't tell you. Yet they've sold and marketed the service as "unlimited" at a time when people download more stuff digitally and own more devices than ever before.

They can't tell me.

Don't get me wrong i do take the ****, last months usage was just over 8TB combined, however as far as I'm concerned i pay for unlimited so if i want to use 100TB thats my business :D

Speeds are so quick on usenet(152mb package) that I don't find the traffic shaping much of an impact. Even when its been slowed down its still plenty quick enough. Though most of my downloading is done overnight anyway.

I've never had any real speed problems with my '152mbps' VM ...until a few days ago.

I don't know whether it's just coincidence, but I made a large ftp download (110GB) in the middle of the night (2-4am), since then my ftp single threaded performance has dropped from ~19MB/sec to ~1MB/sec to that server, even in the early hours. Single threaded performance to other servers has also dropped considerably, I now have to resort to using lftp to get decent speeds.

My usenet speeds have dropped to.

I guess there could be an overutilization issue in the area, but you wouldn't think so in the early hours, or maybe there is some maintenance work in progress.

Will monitor the situation over the next week.

8TB?! You must spend a fortune on HD storage.

I'm surprised VM haven't just asked you to leave, you'll be costing them a small fortune in the long run.

'me me me' mentality springs to to mind, do you know how home broadband is costed? Ever heard of contention ratio?

Oh dual changes things a bit, but 8TB and then 100TB claim!

I have all my favourite TV shows and movies accumulated over many years and that doesn't even consume all of the 4TB drive they reside on and I watch a lot of TV and movies :p The only thing I can think of is data hoarding.
