Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Since I have been with VM for over 10 years, I have had the Modem for the 20Mb service.
Then the Modem for the 50Mb Service. The got the Superhub 1 when I moved house, the done the Superhub 2 beta test. Now on the Superhub 2.5 Beta test. Each time I put my Superhub in modem mode, and use an ASUS RT-N66U, and always get full speed.

chaps,
im on 50mb paying £32 with phone line (contract set to expire)

if i pay 1 years line rental upfront with discount, i can get the same package for £20.50 a month for 12 months. is that a good deal?
Dont think i could find better out there?

This is my result wired in to my crappy old Superhub1.

Whats the cheapest router I could buy that would allow me to keep my full speed? I have an asus RT N13U but it only does 100mb/s.

Last deal i had on just phone and 50mb was £24 a month all in which is quite a bit cheaper than what you posted above. Call them on retentions and see what kind of deal they can give you as it sounds like you aren't getting any loyalty discounts atm.

Just tell them your contract is about to expire and ask them to see what offers they can give you to make the bill cheaper.

From my research it appears the TRENDnet TEW-813DRU (can be bought for under £50) can do a WAN to LAN throughput of about 500mbps, which is why I bought one for my 152Mb Virgin connection, just waiting for it to be delivered.

Just got of the phone with retentions with a view of changing the contract due to price hike coming in February, I'm on 100mb. I was paying £37-38 for the internet and phone. I was given 3 options,

152mb and phone for £40~
100mb and phone for £33~
50mb and phone for £24~

All inclusive.

VM have been saying for ages they're upgrading speed in my area and that my up to 60MB will increase to up to 100MB for free. I signed in and now they're saying to place my order if I want to increase, but that it's free. So I placed my order and they say:

"We'll email you in the next 48 hours to let you know the exact cost of your order (even if it's free or there’s no change to your monthly bill). Don't worry, if there is a change to your bill, you'll get the very best price we can give you based on the mix of services in your package. And remember, if you change your mind about upgrading, you can cancel your new services within 7 days."

Seems odd to me. I'd have thought they would simply do the speed change automatically. The fact I've had to place an order makes me think they're going to come back and say it's going to cost xxxx. Also, my monthly bill went up from £26.50 last month to £27.67 this month. I'd switch to another provider but for the fact that no other provider gives fibre broadband without a phone line.

Just been on the phone as we are paying more for our package than a newcomer, we have b/band 50meg & phone XL anytime & a so called £4 loyalty discount. Our new bill is £43.28 & looking on the website a newcomer after the initial low price will pay £42.49.
Phoned up this morning & the guy (UK call centre) said we are looking at the wrong package on the internet with phone M & that we could save even more if we added a TV package. Couldn't get anywhere as he repeatedly refused to see the cost for the same package, even worse the £4 discount expires in Sept
Unfortunately BT line is rubbish down our road or I'd drop Virgin
Can someone check that I am correct at £42.49 for same package

I think as has been said that's standard for them (the bit in bold I suspect is in every email).

The reason it'll be an "order" is likely because in a lot of cases going up to the new speeds can require a replacement modem, so the system has to check your modem has the ability and is currently supported at the new speed and if not arrange for a new one to be sent out.

We moved to 150 (more like 160+) a month ago and only had to pay something like £6 towards the delivery of the new modem as our package had had a speed increase but the modem (their last pre superhub type) wasn't supported at that speed.

Hi All,

Has anyone else received their e-bill today and it's sprung up by 4.48? I have;

Big Kahuna @ 45.00 a month
Line rental @ 15.99 a month

I've checked the e-bill online, and the big kahuna is now 48.50, line rental 16.99.

I will be ringing them shortly (which ironically will probably cost me more than the 4.48 to ask them what's going on!!), just curious if anyone else is in the same boat.

I don't think that was new news (i.e., see it's Nov?). Didn't you get a print letter, and even some emails too letting you know this. There has been a fair amount of chat (either on tis forum or AVForums) about people phoning to complain and getting the cash knocked off for 6 months or so.

They want you in a new 12 month contract

It appears that it is indeed old news. However I do not recall getting any post from Virgin other than them trying to get me signed upto a mobile phone contract (When I specifically said I don't want one when I signed upto them in the first place!), and I don't actively use this section of the forum nor AVForums.

I'll give them my 2 cents and see what I can get out of them.

Good luck! Pretty shoddy they didn't mail you.

I'm keeping my eyes on it too, I've paid my line rental up front and don't expect to see an increase in charge. I shouldn't anyway, cheeky blighters, that's what a contract is for int he first place.

So guys, I'm moving house within the next two weeks. Currently paying £55 a month for 100mb/ M+ TV and M phone (not one of the new big packages), but I'd like to stick with VM.

Which of the following do you think would be the better option:

  1. Ringing up to cancel in hope of them reducing the price of my package, then going through with the moving house
  2. Cancelling all together and signing up again to get the money off discount for 12 months (£37 a month then £49 a month after 12 months(with line rental)).

A tip for calling premium lines... Use the weQ4u app. http://www.weq4u.co.uk/

It's free! I've been using it for a while and all 0845 numbers don't cost me anything anymore lol.
