Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Might be a 16 down 8 up channel router? The new fon like thing looks cool, total dedicated bandwidth so doesn't slow you down at all, also hoping some relaxation on the upload STM soon not 3 and 4 channel uploads have been seen over at cable forumS

I'm one of the people on Cable Form reporting 3x upstream channels (and 8x downstream channels) since the firmware upgrade. I've put my name down for the trial so fingers crossed. I'm hoping (guessing based on previous trials) that it'll come with a 300Mbps or 500Mbps speed boost too. It wouldn't make much sense to test the extra channel bonding without something to actually test on them, if that makes sense.

The latest 'insider info' is that it could be a rebadged one of THESE. The device supports 16x downstream channels and is good for 680Mbps down and 120Mbps up. Nice! :D Obviously if selected for the trial I'd be subject to NDA, but nothing to stop us speculating/wishing out loud until then. :)

Just had an email about email moving from google servers back to their own. Is this good or bad?

The initial switch from their own to Google was problematic, but at least Google know how to run a mail service. Whether this works or not depends on if it's being done for a better service, or if it's to save money.

Usually anything with VMs sticky fingers all over it has a 75 percent chance of being a disaster for the first six months.

I've just come to the end of my contract with these, 18 months and I'm currently paying £38 for line rental and 30mb BB.

What better deals are currently on offer for me? Don't mind switching to another provider, as long as it's not talk talk. VM are the best ISP I've had, so would prefer to stay, but seems quite pricey with what I'm paying for at the mo.

Depends on what speed you're looking for. But with Virgin you could call up retentions today and they should offer to boost your speed up to 50mb at least if you stay with them.

I'd angle for that and a price decrease as well, see below:

Not had any issues with SH2 or SH2ac, what's been up with yours?

I should have specified that I came from a SH1 which was abysmal.

Still though now i'm on a SH2 I wish that they would iron out a few of the niggling bugs such as wifi drop outs when set to max band speed on the next FW or at least hub release.

But I do suppose it is better than some router/modem combos that other providers supply :p

Past month or so my evening speeds have been terrible. This is what I'm getting tonight.

hi im wondering if anyone has the time to take a look at my graph and maybe give me some advice. i have been having a lot of issues with gaming lately eg random disconnects genrally on any game online, voice comms and skype calls break up.

Superhubs are pretty universally regarded as rubbish routers and WAPs. In modem only mode they're OK, especially SH2 onwards, but for anything else... For example all hubs are crippled for OpenVPN, and refuse to route packets at anything over 3MB/sec even where the line is capable of >19MB/sec otherwise. My SH2 is in modem only mode and patches through to a proper router. Hopefully the 'new hardware' is a decent improvement! VM's response is 'We don't specifically support OpenVPN (or gaming, or uploads, or anything else) so we don't consider it a problem'.

It does say hardware on the forum post so hopefully its a new superhub that'll actually be decent.

Also I've noticed that my hub is now running 3 upstream channels instead of 2 so hopefully the upload will be increased in this trial :D

Mine has gone from 2 channels to 4, hopefully they sort the upload speeds.

Phone them up and ask what they can offer to keep you with them,I'd guess a new superhub 2 and maybe a £5 a month loyalty discount or a 500GB Tivo for £1 a month more wouldn't be amiss.

Urgh, just had yet another price hike letter through the door. A rise to finance channels I have absolutely no interest in watching. I think it's the 3rd price rise in 12 months.

Can anything be done about this? I know with mobile contracts you have the opportunity to bail in such circumstances - same thing with VM?

Cheers in advance.

The letter tells you you can cancel without penalty upto the 31st august.

Problem is lack of alternatives, nothing really gets close to the 152 (which I have most of the time) and BT only do upto 40 where I am, I cant stand them anyway.

Need more competition all over the UK

I've just had the same letter, mine co-incides with the end of my 18 month special mates rates deal I had through my employer. I've not seen what it will go up to yet, but I've been on £53.99 for XL TV, 100Mb BB and phone - incl line rental.

Never use the phone but I love the broadband speed. I have had only two downtimes that laster longer than 2 hours since I joined VM the first time in 2004 - so I am pretty happy with them myself. That said, I'm happy to switch to SKy again as they are offering some serious discounts on TV.

Next month will be the negotiation month :)

Must admit I'm pretty peeved that they want to increase my monthly sub by £3 to fund BT Sport HD, I'd rather they drop my package by £3 and remove all sport channels. The only channel I would not mind having is F1, would be happy to pay £3 for that one.

Yep, got the £3 increase email as well. Second one during the current contract. And I'm not even remotely interested in BT Sport either. Pretty ****ed off.

I called them and said I don't want BT sport and won't pay for it. After a quick chat to cancellations they have removed the £3 rise and reduced my bill by an extra £5 a month....

It's always worth calling and telling them you are not happy and will cancel and go elsewhere....
