Virgin Media Discussion Thread

That would work out nicely. :D

I need 50Mb so I don't have to worry when I pull host on MW2. Dom/FFA/TDM is fine, groundwar makes the baby jesus cry.

usually what happens is they shift the packages around

100mb will become the XXL 50mb will become the XL and 20mb will become the L

Least i hope so, would be pretty stupid to have XXXL

Probably not, VM have to upgrade 20Mb users, a lot will have older modems and they will need moving to docsis3, can't see VM going this for free like they have done in the past.

If you want 50mb at the moment you have to pay an activation fee, I'd be ****ed if they dropped it to upgrade 20mb users..

Not sure how they'll over come this, I can see them having 4 packages.

Just ordered my 50mb!

the people that started out on 20mb probably started out at less than 1 meg back in the day.

You will just have to pay an activation fee for 100mb instead now.

Its all relative as everything moves up the scale. They get 50mb for free without activation fee, you get upgraded from 50mb to 100mb. It's all relative.

guys i have been using my own router for a while, its started playing up so i went back to the 615 that virgin gave me, i had already put dd-wrt on it and i upgraded it to their latest dd-wrt firmware upgrade.

this router is now better than some routers which cost over £100.

the router i was using previously was bought last year for £140 ish (N1 vision).

this now has a lot of functions, and i can now see how many active connections there are (maximum of 4096) when using utorrent.

ive adjusted it to drop connections after 10 minutes, instead of clogging the touter up, so now my torrents are really flying.

The DD wrt upgrade is one of the first things i did.

Out of the box, i kept crashing me out of Steam saying it couldnt connect to the steam servers, couldnt create a connection the VAC servers - couldnt get any of the port forwards to work reliably, Xbox live kept reporting a Nat type of moderate.

Also the box required a reboot at least once every 2 weeks to keep the thing stable. Put the DD WRT firmware on and all my problems have been solved. uPNP actually works now and i can play steam games without having to manually forward ports.

Hurrah !

God knows why virgin insist on messing about with the firmware on the thing.

In a nutshell. Virgin have their own firmware on the router. It's crap.

So you remove and it replace it with some firmware written by a bunch of enthusiasts thats much more functional, and much more reliable.

Piece of cake to do too.

One thing that is worth mentioning however, check that the sticker on your router says Hardware Rev: D2. If its not D2 that guide doesn't apply.

I was running D-Link's default firmware (v4.11) but I've just flashed to DD-WRT. It's running very nicely so far. :) I'd been put off it in the past as it's much heavier than Tomato on a WRT, but it's very sleek on the 615 (which has 2x the CPU clock than a WRT to be fair). Has anyone else noticed their power and WAN lights go, and stay, orange after upgrading to DD-WRT?

guys dd-wrt gets updated on an ongoing basis, therefore you might not want to use those files,

instead check out the official dd-wrt website.

or check the official thread for it here

http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewto...&start=0&sid=6ab4dd817a3c4acb792fcd8c165a5ce6

thats 30 pages worth of reading.

obviously the newer firmwares and info is at the end of the thread, so dont use any on the first few pages, but it would be good for you to read the whole thread so you know exactly how the firmware was and is developed.

this is the current newest firmware - which will probably go out of date within a week - thats how fast its updated.

ftp://dd-wrt.com/others/eko/BrainSlayer-V24-preSP2/06-30-10-r14684/dlink-dir615d/

there are 2 files, you need to flash the factory one first then flash the rev b second.

also you cannot do this from the routers normal firmware update page. you need to put the router into emergency mode, which you can find out how to do in the official thread.

Hm. When I did my D4 I didn't have to use two firmwares and emergency mode's etc..
