Virgin Media Discussion Thread

*sigh* 25% packet loss today, modem upstream power @ 58 dBmv. Engineer coming this week. UK call centre very helpful (0800 052 0431).

Its absoloutly BS that there already thinking about upping there Speeds to 200meg when there are exchanges in the middle of the damn cities like london and what nots who cant even get there 50meg yet -_- Or 40 meg infinity fail for that matter.

Virgin Media call centre no?

Virgin media's broadband support line I think. The phone was answered quickly and the first person I spoke to had more than a clue. Seems they have fixed it at their end today, it's behaving again.

A lot of us are relying on Virgin Media to encourage BT to lay FTTC as soon as possible!

Indeed my friend,

I live right next to one of BTS Main research centres in Ipswich Near Martleshum I have barely 3 meg internet as of current im only 2km from the exchange theres well over 20,000 people on my exchange yet we dont even have 21CN yet or Adsl+2 And im right next to one of there big research centres.

I know when were getting 21CN and what nots and im sure we will get Cable VERY soon after that but what im thinking is if its hard for someone like me in the middle of a major city/town imagine what its like for others who are slightly worse off then me.

this is going to be abit off topic, but also on topic, once the 200mbps becomes standard, will they provide gigabit routers to everyone?

I hope so, or you'll only get 100mb max. Will people also know what their LAN port is, ie. 10/100mb or 1gb. Not everyones machine will have 1gb LAN.

Just got my 50 meg line installed on saturday.

But when i reboot the modem i get 50 meg on the speed tests but after around 20mins or so the connecting drops down to between 5 - 10 meg.

Is there a bedding in time for Virgin or should it be 50meg straight away ?

Even downloads of the Virgin Game demo site slow way down.

Is speedtest reporting this drop in speed, or is it just certain download sites?
Do you get any packetloss from pingtest?

Speedtest reported the drop yes, Also i was getting around 200kb/s - 400kb/s when downloading from the Virgin Game Demo site.

I will try pingtest when i get home.

I was working from home last night and the connecting slowed right down taking upto 5 minutes to connect to work, never had the problems with O2 :(

100mbit coming this year (400mbit also planned) and they are extending the network in a slightly different way..

I knew about the 100Mbps and 200Mbps plans, but 400Mbps? Oh my! That's certainly something to look forward to. I just hope the upstream's more than 1.5Mbps :D 50/5, 100/10 and 400/20 wouldn't be bad.

In before 'omgwtf they can't even get 2Mbps right'.

Virgin are so stupidly annoying with their prices.

Rang them up trying to downgrade from the 50meg we upgraded to recently down to a 20meg as there's just no need for the 50. When we upgraded from our 10meg package the 50meg cost £8 more then the 20meg.

But if we want to downgrade it will only save us £3 a month not the £8 a month and she could only give me a bla bla reason why which didn't make any sence -.-

50meg is doing my head in at the mo yesterday with my netgear router that i have to reboot 7-9 times a day i asked to have replaced that whent well getting the D-link sent to me in a few day`s,the problem was i woke up this morning to find im getting about 3-5meg phoned up the UK support line only to talk to a guy in india which i had trouble understanding what he said, over the last few months ive had nothing but trouble, granted the tech guy is booked for tomorrow but i bet you my problem will have gone before he get`s here making me look like a right numpty.
