Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Man I messed up today :(. When we moved in, the council left us with some lovely unattractive stumps in the middle of the front garden. I've been wanting to remove these to replace with a flowerbed.

Started the digging process today and made progress, until I cut through the VM cable that is. Not sure why they don't run cables around the border, instead of cutting through the lawn. The cable must have been placed before we moved in anyway. Have an engineer coming out on Tuesday. Hope they can fix it there and then, otherwise it'll be charged.

Are you using a SH3 by any chance? If you are, it's an acknowledged issue that should have been resolved in the latest public firmware. If not, there isn't a way around it at the moment until the next firmware, which is currently being trialled, is released :(

Errrr im not sure if its the SH3, what does that one look like?...i sure that i have the SH2, is there a fix for the SH2 device?

We transfer data files, usually 10s, sometimes 100s of GB every day. Does a 33% faster speed from 152 to 200 make a lot of difference? Absolutely. We'd go Gigabit if it was offered.

You're right that most people don't need 200 over 152, but those people probably didn't even need 152 over 100, or even 100 over 50.
I have Hyperoptic 1Gb FTTP all to myself (well, for my apartment block) yet I still only down/upload on average 173GB/month over the last 7 months. For £45/month. Its just nice when clicking on anything and its there done and dusted, I only really notice loading bars when downloading games or their updates like over 10GB in size.

I've always paid for the fastest broadband since the 512k days of Telewest.

I remember back in year 1999 on 56k dial up, downloading a 10MB patch for Age of Empires 2 took 30 minutes - while you couldn't do anything else on the internet during that time lol

I wish I could get Hyperoptic 1Gbps but it's not offered. Maybe for my next flat I'll only see the ones that have it lol.

We're switching from Sky to Virgin at the end of August, cancellation plans made etc.

20Mb line into the house atm to their 300Mb one. Mb or Mbps whatever it is. Should be a damn sightbetter! Not sure what bundle it's exactly called as my Stepdad made the switch when he went out the other day.

I had to get a download manager with resume capability to get a demo of Delta Force 1 because the free ISP I was using would disconnect sessions after one hour. I got ADSL in 2001 and have had the fastest service available ever since.

SH3 is white, where as SH2 is black and made by Netgear. The SH2 doesn't have the issue with NAT in modem mode, IIRC. The SH3 does have this issue, irrespective of mode, and should be fixed in the next publicly available firmware version (once it's been trialled)

Morning all,

Just came off the phone to Virgin about my (50mb) broadband speeds in the evening, some evenings I'm hitting 25-30 which is acceptable but others it's as low as 8-9.

The support person went on to say that because I'm using Wi-Fi, the speed from the router is halved and then the speed is divided by how many devices I have connected (3).

I challenged this and said during the day I hit 50mb with the same number of devices on Wi-Fi, but he just kept saying it's the same with any provider.

Is what he is saying true?

Nope.

You're in a congested area and will get slow speeds at peak times. Normally 4pm - 12am.

Biggest issue with VM at the moment.

I would suggest looking at alternative ISPs, especially Fibre. If' you're lucky, you will get good speeds with fibre.

I'm stuck with Virgin Media because Fibre speeds are 15Mbps due to me being too far away from my cabinet!

I thought he was talking drivel.

Well I've signed up for 12 months so looks like I don't have a leg to stand on at the moment.

Thanks

Lol seriously he said that? Omg he needs the instant sack, what an absolute noob!

Yep, he really said that. I called him out straight away, told him I'm not buying it.

Gonna try calling a few more times see if I get anywhere then think I'll go for early contract exit. I read somewhere that if they aren't providing the service you're paying for, you can get out of the contract.

I got out of mine in 2011/2012 or so by complaining to the CEO email. Took a few weeks but worth it in the end, BT FTTC was in a different league.

Thanks for the heads up, I guess if I'm in a congested area there won't be much they can do to fix it short term.

They'll keep giving you money off if you complain and give you a date in the future. When that date isn't met, they give you another and more money off.

I found each time I went through to the support line I had to start from step one again. It was infuriating. Crooked company.

Instead of concentrating on headline figures, they should look after existing customers and invest in their quite frankly shocking network.

Vivid 100mb - £30 a month?

I'm with Sky just now but Virgin have recently dug up the street and installed their network. I'm pretty happy with Sky but it's 55mb @ £30 a month on their fibre pro.

Due to being a new area - surely it should be relatively "congestion" free?

Wouldn't event consider it.

I live in central London and don't have any issues with VM speeds.

Could be worth trying and cancelling within the cooling off period. Keep it or cancel before actually cancelling Sky as VM will not need the phoneline
