Virgin Media Discussion Thread

I have just moved from Virgin, had the 50Mb but terrible issues since February and estimated fix November, possibly. Moved to BT and getting 50Mb and my upload speed went from 3Mb to 10Mb.

Up until this year they have been great but the issues and price increase got on my nerves. Sure they were going to upgrade the speed to 70Mb so they can be the fastest but what they really need is a speed maybe 20/25Mb with a lower price

Hi Guys,

I'm in the process of moving and looks like Virgin Media will be one of the options. The site states we can get up to 300MB if we pay for it, I'm interested in the 200MB but is there a way of finding out how oversubscribed the area is?

Apart from knocking on doors, just want to see how likely it is that after 4pm I'll be sitting on a 10MB connection!

Search for your postcode on the VM forum, usually does the trick.

Anyone have any tips on how to get a better deal on my Virgin services? My contract is up this month and I feel like im pay far too much for what i get (see below).

I cancelled today. Found the product good. The service awful. The advisor I spoke to on the phone was vile. Zero deals to be made too - just a tirade about how their competitors aren't competitors because the products are inferior. Best 'deal' they'd do? £1.50 more than my current bill, and a drop from 70Mbps down to 50Mbps.

Ooh, tough choice... Do I pay more and take a speed cut? Or can you **** off?

yup,again 90mbps and no more.

Same this morning at around 8:30am,I mean surly not many people would have been using the network around where i live at that time of the morning.

They say they're increasing the speeds, yet they seem to be limiting them.

This is my 200mbps guys.:o

Bear in mind,I use to get around 150mbps anytime!!!!!!!!!!

EDIT - Goose,i have basically the same package as you and with the phone bill its usually around £120-125 PM.. :/

How are you connecting to the Virgin router? If you only have low-end wireless or 10/100 Ethernet you aren't going to benefit from speed increases.

The other likely reason is living in an area where Virgin are suffering from congestion issues.

This.
I had to replace all my cables with Cat6 before I could properly take advantage of my 200mb upgrade.

So the product is good but you still want a discount/wasn't happy? OK then.

Odd conclusion that. Sounds more like he's being offered reduced speed internet and being charged more rather than after a discount on a package which was good and now not quite so.

You're looking at it the wrong way. I wasn't expecting a discount. I was already looking to move as my bill has gone from £19/month two years ago to £32/month today. To try and get me to stay, they offered me 50Mbps for £28/month, or 50Mbps and TV M for £48/month. When I pointed out that neither price was competitive, and as a result I still wished to cancel, the advisor then proceeded to lie about Virgin's products and its competitors' products.

While I've found Virgin's product good, the savings from moving my broadband and TV to BT are huge. Even Sky were a tenner a month cheaper than Virgin. Were I a new customer, I actually could have got a decent deal. Existing customers are patronised and lied to in lieu of reasonable pricing.

Give retensions a call. Have just recently got my bill down to £104 (from £133) (Don't accept there 1st offer)

I also have 1x 1TB Tivo box, 500GB Tivo Box & a V HD Box.

Sorry came across as a bit of a douche. All have faults, but speaking to first line idiots is only going to end bad, keep trying retentions until you have a deal that works for you, they do have them, even as a existing customer.

Co worker just got bt, they somehow connected the wrong exchange and can't fix it for a month.... Funnily enough, they managed to send the bill out pretty damn fast.

I'll admit, it is a tad worrying that almost nobody has a good word to say about BT... I fully expect to be ditching them the moment the contract is up.

I haven't spoken to retentions at all. Got the front line idiot, who put me through to "cancellations". After 15 minutes on hold, he comes back on and apologises for the wait, says my contract is now cancelled and hangs up. On the basis that I'm not sure anyone has processed my cancellation (I've had no email, and nothing is showing in my account), I sent a letter via RMSD this morning.

The guy I spoke to was great. I can get what I have now for £24.99 (currently about £50) if I stay with them. Unfortunately the place we are going to rent as of next week doesn't have cable in the area.

On the plus side, I don't have to pay the remaining 6 months we have here.

Going to miss those fast speeds until our house buy goes through.

Im moving to a Virgin enabled area in a few weeks and just searched the forums for my postcode (bl2) as you suggested and it's not good reading :( Many complaints about contention issues that have been going on for a couple of years.

Not good really as I was relying on Virgin as the location is quite far (1. 8km) from the BT exchange so possibly poor ADSL/fibre speeds.

Hey all, I actually work for VM. If you are thinking of connecting up i can get you a perm introductory offer. Drop me an IM and i can get prices etc. They are revamping the "mates rates" deals soon.

Oversubscription on your segment or bad power levels.

So in the end I did have to call them to get the power level sorted, but not because of the poor upload speed. I got my free speed increase from 50 to 70Mbps but afterwards my download speed varied between 0.5 and 2Mbps - and my upload speed was a rock solid 5Mbps (yay.)

Try watching a high def movie on Netflix at 0.5 down, it's fun, honest!

Quick call and they boosted the power level and now I get (even in peak hours) 70 to 73 down and 5 up.

Hi all,

If you are thinking of joining VM, i can get "Mates Rates" on some deals. Drop me a message if you are interested. I will put some details up of what is on offer currently

Kind Regards
Richard
