Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Get a ping monitor up if you're going to do that and test speeds throughout the day.

I was in a supposed non congested area a few years ago and streaming was awful. Speedtests always came in at 150+ though.

Flippin' heck, I was getting about 100mb speeds from my 152mb fibre connection before, Virgin just upgraded it to 200mb and....

Consider me a happy bunny!

One question: What Superhub (version) have you got? Superhub 1, Superhub 2, Superhub 2-AC, etc?

Nothing but problems in Nw4 at the moment, has been offline or intermittent for a week now, cancelling the direct debit in 7 days & going back to BT if they can't fix it, better off with a slower connection than a fast offline one! Rapidly turning out to be a bunch of bloody clowns that can't decide on what's the actual issue

Just received an Email saying i can upgrade for free from my current 152 Optical Fibre to 200 and i dont need to change any of my equipment as its already set up for it.

I have no doubt they will put up the price of my package say a month or 2 into it,They always do..but im just wondering if anyone else has upgraded theirs.

  • Is it just as simple as changing a setting on their end and thats it
  • Will i get a increase in upload speed going from 152 to 200 vivid?

Virgin have had an over saturated network for years. Problem is it takes forever for them to increase capacity as it requires digging.

Gotta do some dip sampling of your area, I know all the houses in my street bar 2 are Virgin customers for example. It's a dense working class residential area so obviously Virgins competitive prices draw people in.
As such the peak time broadband is.... Shocking.

2 years ago I was strung along for six months of shifting dates and having to phone them every month to get a discount...so I left for sky Fibre slower overall speed at higher cost... But during peak time it does not waver a single bit same speeds and less jitter so as a gamer worth the extra it costs.

To this day my neighbors still complain about peak time slow down, Virgin have laid no extra cable....i don't tell them I moved to sky.. Don't want to ruin my internets

  • Is it just as simple as changing a setting on their end and thats it - Yes
  • Will i get a increase in upload speed going from 152 to 200 vivid? - No, it remains 12mbps

I really want better upload speeds... 12 Mbps is embarrassing these days.

Can't even get anywhere near that.

Get typically 1 or 2Mbps upload. Occasionally I've seen 2.5, but never more than that, yet the SH (the original, not even the 2 and never mind the 3) supposedly is syncing at 3.7Mbps for upload :(

It's really been making working from home painful to the extent I pretty much can't do it now.

Anyone got any thoughts why the upload might be so bad??

Oversubscription is what it is I guess, but is there any way to check or improve power levels?

Phone customer service, and they can tell you if it's oversubscription. The usual sign is if speeds are good during the day when everyone else is out, and bad in the evenings and weekends when everyone is using the service.

For power levels, check what your superhub pages are reporting as upstream power levels. They should be at least above 36, and not more than 52. You then need to get a tech out who will either fiddle with your street cab, or put an attenuator on the modem.

Our upload speeds in the UK seem to be rather crap compared to other countries,Guys in the US seem to get much better upload speeds.

To be honest,I dont really see the point in anything over 50mbps connections,Because at best when downloading something from Steam,Origin or anything else im lucky to see anything between 9-15mbps and its been like this for years.

Still after upgrading to the free 200mbps (from 156mbps) ive not noticed any speed increase when i do a speed test,In fact my speedtest results have dropped significantly the past couple of months.
I use to get around 150mpbs anytime,Not im lucky to see 90 but meh,Reliability is what im looking for and VM are.

Im going to try without my IntelPro 1000PT Server Nic and see if my speedtest reports are any different.

Upload speeds on Virgin have always been relatively low, it's a result of the technology used.

If you're only seeing 90Mbps on a 200Mbps connection with Virgin then complain, you should at a minimum be able to get a discount.

With Stream I'd guess you're confusing Megabits per second (Mbps) and Megabytes per second (MBps). 15MBps is approx. 120Mbps. The capitalisation of the b/B is very important.

How are you connecting to the Virgin router? If you only have low-end wireless or 10/100 Ethernet you aren't going to benefit from speed increases.

The other likely reason is living in an area where Virgin are suffering from congestion issues.

Hi Guys,

I'm in the process of moving and looks like Virgin Media will be one of the options. The site states we can get up to 300MB if we pay for it, I'm interested in the 200MB but is there a way of finding out how oversubscribed the area is?

Apart from knocking on doors, just want to see how likely it is that after 4pm I'll be sitting on a 10MB connection!

Just search for complaints on their official forums.
