Virgin Media Discussion Thread

I don't care either way, I'm paying the old 152Mbit price for 200Mbit.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You specifically stated a few seconds are saved from a download. This is not true.

An 8GB download is pushing it! Why didn't you quote the figures for a 50GB download and get a bigger difference?

If we assume that we are all consuming licenced media then the only time you're usually going to need to download a really big file is an OS ISO. Not something you usually do on a daily basis.

These high bandwidth packages do have their place, and to me that's where you have multiple users consuming bandwidth.

Just rang retentions but it didnt go well lol! The guy said he couldn't extend my current discounts and when I said to put in my 30 day cancellation request he said dont expect a call from outbound as we don't even have that department anymore.

Poor show, especially considering my area has been oversubscribed for almost a year with the review date constantly being pushed back. The rolling credit doesn't make up for a 2/3 reduction in speed.

Hoping to get a call back from someone, although if not actually ready to move on for once instead of just blagging about it!

Internet and TV been down all day God forbid been reading a book! Lol think it's down in my area says 8pm fix time.

Just had a look on VM page and it says my speed boost is ready and they are sending me the new Hub as I am still on the first one. I am looking forward to the speed boost as we have several gaming pc's and an Xbox one which are constantly downloading games/updates.

ok, what about steam/origin/GOG/uplay, having a high download speed saves a lot of time.

per month i use around 1TB on downloading games via those clients, watch netfix/now tv/amazon prime.

FALSE!

8GB file @ 152Mbit = 7mins 30s
8GB file @ 200Mbit = 5mins 30s~

I don't know what dimension you're on, but minutes do not equal seconds!

Technically you're correct. If you were in a situation where you had to do that all day every day then the difference would be significant. However that's not generally a typical usage pattern for a home user, and people don't normally sit watching downloads progress - they do other things while they wait, like reply to forum posts.

Either way the law of diminishing returns kicks in, without a increasing file size the difference in each doubling of speed become less and less noticeable.

We transfer data files, usually 10s, sometimes 100s of GB every day. Does a 33% faster speed from 152 to 200 make a lot of difference? Absolutely. We'd go Gigabit if it was offered.

You're right that most people don't need 200 over 152, but those people probably didn't even need 152 over 100, or even 100 over 50.

If you read my original post ( #12870 ) all I said was that there was nothing you could do with a 200Mbps connection that you couldn't do equally well with a 150mbps connection (actually I managed to type MBps but let's ignore that).

There will obviously be extreme cases where an extra 50Mbps will make a significant difference, but for most people most of the time it won't matter.

I think 50Mbps is a nice general-purpose base speed. 50/10 would likely cover the vast majority of use cases for home users and home office types.

3Mbps upload on VM's base package is a bit pants but still adequate for a couple of home workers using Outlook, OneDrive etc.

Looking to switch back to VM again. Should I go with VMNG300 modem getting 100/6 or try superhub again getting 150/10 for same price.

Originally I had 50mb using VMNG300 modem and it was flawless, as soon as I got my free upgrade to speed and using originally released superhub it felt awful. Speeds did increase but jitter/pings seemed worse, and it was horrible playing online games.

Is the new superhub still flaky compared to VMNG300.

You won't get a modem now, you will get a superhub, and they do have issues having been dumbed down for easy support and non-technical customers. They do have a modem mode you can set them into and then use a proper router if you want something better.

+1 for modem mode on super hubs, wave bye bye to any signal/stability issues. As a pure modem they are rock solid.

Does anyone know if the Superhub has built in NAT functionality?? I have the Superhub in modem mode as im using a Linksys router for all the wireless duties but am noticed on Consoles such as the XBOX One and PS4 im getting either Strict or Moderate NAT types, i have UPnP enabled and have opened the correct ports (Port Trigger) but it doesn't seem to help.

My research has brought up a term known as 'Double NAT', which is where the BB suppliers modem has a built in NAT function that cant be disabled, is this the case with the SuperHub??

My whole internet & TV was down last night, was back up this morning though..been trying to find out if they had done anything in my area or it was simply a fault.

only thing i could find.
You might find that youre not able to watch Mamma Mia - Recieving Error Code 319 on your Virgin Media TV Catch Up, On Demand or TV Choice service at the moment.

Mamma Mia :D

I'm taking a stab in the dark here but isn't some random modem you have in a drawer not going to work with a new subscription?

The new (white) Superhub thing seems pretty capable from what I've seen.

Are you using a SH3 by any chance? If you are, it's an acknowledged issue that should have been resolved in the latest public firmware. If not, there isn't a way around it at the moment until the next firmware, which is currently being trialled, is released :(
