Virgin Media Discussion Thread

I've recently got this package for my house in Bristol (I'm a student). Did a speedtest and was getting 10.69 Mbps download and 1.48 Mbps upload. Have to say, I'm pretty annoyed. Was expecting a lot more for downloads. You guys reckon I should give Virgin a call, or do you think I'm just stuck with these speeds?

Phone Virgin on the dedicated support line. Also, what are you using to speedtest? Some servers seem to give crap speeds. Try http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/

tbh why would you want a 50MB connection? seriously, how often would anyone actually have a NEED for that kind of speed? imo 2mb is more than enough for the average joe & 10 or 20mb fine for advanced users.

So you can watch BBC iPlayer in HD all day and not get capped...:p

2MB is rubbish internet speed. For downloading anything or watching anything, it's pretty **** poor.

I've had bad experiences with two WRT610N routers (both slow down to like 5Mbit after a few hours) and I'm still using my WRT54G /w Tomato, so I get maximum 35Mbit!

Virgin promised me to send their router, twice, for two weeks now. I know it'll be junk, but I still want the full speed.. I think a complaint is in order.

I had this as well, I switched to the DDWRT firmware - its been a lot better since

My upload is back to 1.5mb, I had no internet when I woke up this morning, reset the modem to restore it but my 5mb upload has gone now :(

Ok ive got virgin installing 50mg next friday at my new student house. Ive had 20mg before from virgin and it was pretty good apart from the odd downtimes. Litterally moved just up the road from my old student house so fingers crossed everything will be ok.

Anything i should ask/look out for when the "engineer" turns up on the friday?

Don't get me wrong for the first 3-4 hours of the 50Mbs connection i was getting 5.9Mbs downstream now i only hit 1.2Mbs if i am lucky, and thats even with having the modem connected direct to the computer and the laptop without any router connected.

Any ideas? any time besides around 7pm to midnight my internet is brilliant and i'd really recommend it, however during those times this is what i get:

this is REALLY annoying and considering 50mb hasn't got any traffic management what the hell could this be?

and to be clear outside of the said times this is brilliant 0% package loss, and sub 30ms on most things

I have the same problem as you aprt from the first 3 hours after install of 50Mbs service on Saturday gone and all i get now is 1 - 1.5Mbs downstream rate its been bad not worth paying although i have an engineer booked for tomorrow morning.

Your local router, the cabinet near your house, has too many people connected to it.....oversubscribed UBR, is the name for it, and will probably take weeks for them to do anything about it....and as soon as they increase capacity, your on a countdown until it becomes congested once more...

Used to happen to me all the time, thats why i went back to ADSL....
