Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Hey chaps, I just got an email from VM saying

'Lee, you were on up to 100Mbps, but we’ve given you up to 150Mbps.
Luckily, like Usain Bolt we’re really fast, because we provide the UK’s fastest, widely available broadband. That’s why we’ve boosted your broadband speed to up to 150Mbps. No strings. No catches. And you don’t have to do a thing, it’s all happened automatically. To find out just how fast your broadband is now, click “Check your speed” at the bottom of this email'

I'm sitting in the barber shop chair so will speed test when I get home. :)

I hope there really is no catch and they don't put my price up.
I have superhub 2 but not ac. I assume I can still receive 150Mbps.

Your price for the speed boost won't go up, but your bill will increase when the rises take effect

No catch other than you'll lose the boost if you change your package at all, that includes renegotiating price when renewing contract/after price increases etc.

Oh. How much and when are these rises?

Depends on what you have from them, on average it's a ~10.5% increase.

Straight broadband only. No tv, no landline. I've been paying £28.25 for a few months ever since I complained to them when they told me it was going up to about £33/34. Not sure how much longer they'll keep my current price reduced but when it goes up again and the rise also comes in, I'll do the same again, threaten to leave.

In reality though, I don't think there's another company doing BB only, so I've actually got to stay with VM.

Getting annoyed with the utilisation problems. It's nice having 200Mbps during the day, but having 100+ ping and 10Mbps during the evening when I mostly use the net is getting to me.

Review date is 7th of Sept. If still no progress, then I guess I will use the price hike to cancel my package and move to a 20MBps FTTC connection. :(

Well, just tested the new speed and getting more than the 150, closer to 160Mbs so that's cool. Upload speed used to be 6 or 7 and is now 10Mbs. I'm not sure what the upload speed is meant to be, but it's decent enough.

Rather odd. Connecting to my Wi-Fi, I used to get over 105 Mbps on my phone with the Ookla speed test app. Now it's only going to between 70 and 88 Mbps and that's with my speed increase to 150Mbps. I've uninstalled the app and re downloaded it from google play, but makes no difference. As shown two posts up, no problem on laptop.

Yes, new customers only. I work for VM as-well. Also you cannot add on mates rate if you are just adding a new service.

I was on a deal with the VIP service until Tuesday - was going to ring tomorrow and cancel everything. Are they offering any kind of incentives to existing customers or is just new ones? (if so, I might go be a new customer of Sky!)

Hey man. Do you know if you can add onto one of the mates rates deals? aka i would like to get one of the cheaper bundles but upgrade the internet to 200meg which on the website is generally like 6 quid or or there abouts. Could i do that with one of those bundles or would it cancel out the mates rates?

Cheers

Getting setup with Virgin on the 31st, is their HUB "good" ? We currently have the Sky one and it just.. works. Is there even any point into getting third party one like Netgear, Asus etc?

I see it's a popular choice swapping out the Router whatever you call it, Router to me! and some type of firmware.

Wait and see.

Of the people I know locally that have Virgin broadband none of them have needed use third-party routers.

The Sky router isn't exactly high end, so if you're okay with that you should be okay with the Superhub.

After learning about virgin mates rates I an reluctant to sign up without them. Any employees here able to help me with a mates rates deal? Have already cancelled my sky, it ends on the 18th so would rather get virgin sorted sooner rather than later :)

Yep I would wait and see how you get on.

I already had one of the Asus routers and was easy enough changing the super hub into modem-only mode and let the Asus handle everything else.

Yep - ping me your email via trust and I'll send you the referral :)

You can add mates rates if you're taking a core service that you didn't have before, eg adding TV to a broadband only account, but it wipes out other offers :)
It also puts you into an 18month contract.
