Virgin Media Discussion Thread

No experience of Cheltenham but I had VM in Abbeydale, Gloucester and it was pretty poor at evenings and weekends. Don't forget that there's a lot of student accommodation in Cheltenham. Best bed is to Google the first bit of your post code along with Virgin Media congestion or search it on their forums.

Thanks, cant see anything much related to Cheltenham in terms of congestion. I have a few friends with virgin in the area and they all report no trouble. One mentioned that peak it dips from 200 to closer to 100 but that would still be 60 meg faster than I currently have.

VM guy has all been and done the switch, went from 2.6mb/s downloads on Steam with Sky, to a current 10.7mb/s so. Pretty pleased!

On Wifi, can't use wired/powerline due to different electrical circuits and router downstairs.

I'll be signing up for add on immediately tomorrow if it's available as I'm fed up of the slow YouTube upload speeds.

For the price Virgin charge on 200mb it should have 20mb upload as standard anyway.

Where in Cheltenham? I have a few friends that live there, I could ask around.

I'd also ask some of your friends to put up a TBB monitor graph so you can see the amount of jitter (if any).

You're assuming that upgrading will fix all the issues VM has with it's network.

I believe that this isn't the case, even VM employees are clueless.

Now, if spending an extra £5 fixes all my congestion issues. Then sign me up, but until I see evidence of this then it's just another money making scheme.

Really really hope they raise the price so I can hopefully get out of my contract, BB has been ok (not great for 200MB though), but TV has been so bad i've just ordered Sky and will have to pay for both for now as I hate TiVo!

I'm only paying so I can make use of the extra upload speed which will save quite a bit of time uploading. Thankfully in my area there is no congestion issues and never has been, been with them since 2002 when NTL owned it.

Of course it's another money making scheme, but if I want a faster upload I don't have much choice.

You can get out of it right now as prices are already going up. Letters have been going out for the past week or two but you don't need to wait for it to arrive.

Just call 150 and go through the options to thinking of leaving us.

Thanks, I'm near PC World. To be honest Jitter isn't a huge concern I don't really game much online these days my main requirement is a solid upload for Plex media streaming and cloud backup.

I got the email a few days ago:

From 1st November, your bill will be going up by £3.49 a month

..snip

We really hope you'll want to carry on enjoying it all. But if not, don't worry - you can change your package at any time. Or you can cancel it before 30th September 2016 and you won't pay any cancellation charges. Just click here for more information.

So if I'm still in-contract I can cancel? Thinking of downgrading to broadband only as never use home line.

Yep, you can either cancel or renegotiate a better deal if you recontract. It used to be a once a year thing but now it's getting silly and twice a year.

Just rung VM up and switched over the gamer package, though I don't think some of the sale people know about it yet as she had to get a manager to confirm it.

Apparently all I need to do is reboot my hub when I get home and I'll be on the new package. Got 14 days to see if it's any better, if it's not then I'll just drop it back down to the normal 200 vivid.

Just tried calling to upgrade but apparently there systems are down.

Is it confirmed that the Vivid 200 Gamer has no upload caps during the evening?

For £13 more you can get 300 download/ 20 up and no bandwidth control at all as well & a few other extras with the homeworks + add on.

Was about to upgrade from 200mb to the 200mb gamer package, but I was offered 300mb with a £6 rolling discount. So hopefully around £52 a month (broadband only) if they can put that through with their system issues.

Was only a tiny bit extra so it was worth it.
