Virgin Media Discussion Thread

I never check my speed,it really does not bother me what speed i get as long as im connected,if i get 10 meg out of my 70 then i will still be happy.

Good for you.

Most annoying thing when I had VM was gaming in the evening or trying to watch on demand. High pings and lots of buffering.

When people have had their virgin installed - how successful have they been in getting them to install it into a cupboard in the centre of the house - i.e around a central location near the stairs? im looking to get a gigabit network set up and my installer said he would move the BT phone line here too. Ideally if i get virgin for internet too i would like it in the same location

They will install it to where ever you want, but will always leave the cables accessible (around skirting and the like) they will not lift floors or even put cable under floors if you have the boards already up.

My guy gave me a length of cable, I ran it under the (already up) boards, and he just terminated the ends with connectors for me.

They won't lift boards, but if you do all the prep and run the cable for them, you can get the cable where you want it.

You are absolutely right. I've literally gotten off the phone to them.

Received an ad through the post Full house bundle inc line rental - "12 months for £55, then £76 per month."

Call to sign up but I get told it will cost me £87 lmao. Tells me the £55 quid for 12 months is only for new customers, which I totally accepted. But then I tell him it says "then £76 per month" and ask him if I can have it at the normal price then. He says no, and basically tells me I have to pay £11 extra per month because I've been a customer for 7 years.

Told him I'll be calling again soon to cancel my services.

I'm not a new customer but I got that £55 deal,I even got a new contract and account number, after the year it will be £80,I was happy with that after the trouble I had.

Thats good to know - my brother is having his whole has rebuilt - he got his builders to lift the boards on the day he came and he just installed it to the desired location, under the boards and out of sight.

Not sure how i can do it but i may need to run it through the loft for them - which i have no idea how to do, unless i get them to come the same day i get my network installer to come.

Yes, it can be really dependent on who you get on the other end of the phone. I managed to get offered the 200Mb Gamer package for £20 a month to which I didn't hesitate to say yes. The previous best offer I had was £35 month.

I also got a refund of £55 for the 5 months of disconnections every 2048 seconds (~34 minutes) aka Port Flapping. I'm on the 116V firmware now which has fixed that but as Gareth said the latency problem is still there but because it isn't a "in your face" issue, I doubt it will be fixed any time soon.

Out of interest how many have a black SH3?

My connection has been bad for the last few days, between 1-15Mb. I just downloaded a game and this is what I got (speedtest is bottom right):

I am on 200Mb package, took 17m to download 32.2GB.

Damn if I got those speeds when on VM I'd have been very happy.

Checked my package, still Vivid 200. Just did a speed test and got 300/12. Might be making up for the last few days of bad connection?

As Gareth said above, check the config in your hub. It's the only way you'll know whether it's a real increase or an anomaly (AV software, caching, broken speedtest).

If you're using a VPN turn it off too, they often make your speed be reported at much higher than it actually is.
The speed has been up and down for the last 3-4 days, think VM are doing some upgrades or something, speedtest gets 210/12 now so looks like its back to normal. I downloaded 32.2GB in 17 minutes last night, that looks faster than normal to me. Steam was showing over 40MB/s with a peak of 43.1MB/s which is about 344Mb before overhead.

your hub would have rebooted itself when your speed changed, if you got put on 300Mb your hub would have rebooted itself so that config file would be installed and same when put you back on 200Mb.

I had my 200mb service upgraded to the 'Gamer' package today. It oddly had to be a manned install, not sure why as from what I was told, all he did was swap out the Superhub 2 for the Superhub 3.

Imeddiately after setting the Superhub 3 to modem mode, I thought this is weird, why are my download speeds consistently only hitting 150-160mbps?

After switching from modem mode to router mode on the Superhub 3, I realised that my Asus RT-AC66U router with Tomato firmware was causing the problem. It's probably been like this for months and I've not noticed! - blamed local network over subscription!

I upgraded to the lastest Shibby Tomato release and afterwards performed a factory reset, but the same issue was occuring, capped at between 150mbps-160mbps.

Have now switched to Merlin firmware and so far so good!
