Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Hey All,

Quick question, and I'm not sure if this has been covered already, I just received a Super Hub 3, a couple of days ago, and there's 2 issues I've noticed. Firstly the GUI is noticeably slower the the SH1 I had before, and secondly and more worryingly when I open the login Page, the password I type is in clear text! Is there anyway to change the settings so the password its obscured (i.e. *******)?

Cheers,

Locrieth

The SH3 WebUI is indeed slow as treacle in router mode. If you switch to modem mode it's way, way better (I pass off to an APU box running OPNsense or IPFire). The password being plaintext is a 'feature', and VM have no intention of changing it. Apparently, you wouldn't log in if it wasn't safe to do so anyway, so they don't care. Never mind that browsers can cache the password in autofill because it's plaintext...

That's rubbish VM :(
I sometime connect to my router from work at lunch time, if connections to things like plex on my media center are running slow, so i can reboot the router (a constant issue with SH1). So the combination of slow interface and plain text password are really not helpful! Unfortunately not got a spare router I can use along side this or the funds to get one at the moment (blew all my spare cash on a 1070)!

You could VPN into your home network and then connect to the router internally. The plain text will be encrypted over your VPN and as such turn off external access to the router.

Hmm not a bad idea. As I've only had the router a few days, not seen if I'm getting the slow downs I used to get on the SH1, I would have to reboot weekly as I usually game on a Thursday night and it would be unplayable until I rebooted the router (Even internal Pings would be high and it was hardwired), then the ping would drop back to 1ms internally and reasonable pings to google DNS (8.8.8.8). I'll see how it goes over the next week or so and see if the slow down issues occur again.

The other day I was sat at home and suddenly my Virgin cable started getting yanked from outside. I peered out the window and found the engineer pulling on the cable, obviously thinking it was connected to my neighbour's house which he was installing.
Since then my 200mb connection is getting 30mb speeds, is it possible he's done something to my connection or just a pure coincidence?

u may not be on the latest firmware yet because the latest firmware boosts the UI performance, even though it's still alittle laggy at times..

the plain text password is still a issue that they need to fix.

he may of done something to the cable.

is it all day your only getting 30Mb or only in the evening/night?

I would have thought the answer to this is pretty obvious. He's probably loosened the cable or damaged it.

Just checked on the cable my street for my street and it has changed to

I know this is a long shot but any ideas of time scales? 1 month, 6 months or longer likely? Im at end of my contract and dont want to start a new 12 month contract if its gonna come soon.

I've got one of these Superhub V3s, over wifi I can't grumble sometimes its slow. However when I'm plugged direct into router I'm getting terrible speeds.. 1mb/2mb. Despite calling them several times they are now saying the fault is my computer.

I've not historically had a problem with other routers, do they have a point about it being my PC? Paying for 200mb and not getting anywhere near that!

I got the same thing... it would happen after a while and need a reboot (of the router, not the pc)... then it'd be fine again for a while.

Since I put mine in modem mode and hung a Draytek out of the back of it my latency is a lot better and I'm not getting chunks of dropped packets anymore..
Speeds arent quite as good though but hell, I'll take that over an unstable connection...

ive had 200 since it came out and havnt seen past 90, debating to phone up and say just drop me on the 100 since theres no point in paying for 200 when im no where near it
