Virgin Media Discussion Thread

The problem will not go away using the SH3 in modem only mode. The only way to remove that latency spike issue is to go back to the SH2/SH2ac.

I don't have one :(

It was a new install.

I guess I need to try MW:R and Battlefield 1 tonight to see how bad things are then start a long complaints procedure.

:( :(

Formally complain to VM HQ, they will then order you a SH2ac like they did with me.

Speaking of which, I am due a call from the complaints handler today to discuss the discounts due on my account for all this. Let's see if he calls...

After replacing the Asus RT-N66U with a Virtual PfSense box running on my Dell T-20 and a Ubiquiti AP AC Pro, the maximum speed I've seen on SpeedTest has increased (I assume the Asus router was struggling to cope with the download speed).

Also now getting this kind of speed on my Laptop via wireless and HTC 10. Given the Asus wasn't AC enabled that's not too surprising though.

/edit this is using a SH 2 (Not AC) in modem only mode

Got a link to start the process off?

No links, it's old skool writing a letter then snailing it in their direction:

Virgin Media
Matrix Court,
Siemens Way,
Enterprise Park,
Swansea
SA7 9BB

Cool, thanks.

I will test it out tonight (although not hopeful to be honest) and then post a letter tomorrow.

Did you put anything about pings/packet loss in your letter?

Bravo Virgin.

Just received an email from them...

Hello James
Your gaming just levelled up.
With unlimited downloads and the UK’s fastest widely available upload speed, VIVID 200 Gamer is a connection made for playing.
Whether you’re puzzling, battling or racing, you’ve now got the extra power you need to play, stream gameplay and chat with teammates, all at the same time.
Plus, there’s no traffic management. So you can game on, and on and on.

About that...

The hilarious thing is that traffic management makes zero difference to gaming anyway. The complaints rep laughed at VM's choice at calling it the Gamer Package as well.

Seems these things are done by execs who are clueless (surprise surprise).

What exactly is a "gamer package"?

Same as the 200mb package but with with 20mbps upload instead of the usual 12mbps with no upload throttle over 1gb in a hour.

VM sold it as you'd have better ping / latency etc whilst gaming when the download speed is identical to the normal 200mbps package but they'll happily charge you £5 / £10 more a month for the luxury.

Glanza than you since I don't have 200 package it's hard to spot the subtleties

So whuich would give you a better gaming experience

Normal 200 + SH2AC
Gamer 200 + Hub3

(rhetorical question)

Basically a package aimed as the best available for gamers, I admit I bought the BS (as I'm a heavy online gamer, as is my son so thought this would be the best thing with zero problems) and this is a particularly bitter pill to have to swallow.

I'm coming back to VM after 10 months away. Took up there VIP package at £85. I just hope that after 5pm all is ok this time.
