Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Well, the 200mbps service has been live a week now, the SH3 is in modem mode hooked up to my Asus running Merlin - been gaming most evenings and not noticed the SH3 drop yet, constantly getting 200-215mbps on Speedtest hard wired which I check throughout the evening on the laptop to make sure its not dropping during peak times. So far so good!

I did some search on SH3 because Virgin offered me 300 gamer package but I have to swap my SH2ac to SH3.

The problem with the SH3 chipset is not about dropping speed or connection, the main issue is the random ping spikes, you might not notice this in normal uses like web browsing/watching video. But sudden change of ping from 20ms > 200ms > 20ms can be a problem for those who play FPS games.

At the end, I lower the monthly bill and took the 200 gamer package.

Coming up to the end of my contract and looking at moving. I wanna switch to a rolling day 30 day contract but at the moment virgin are saying I'd have to sign up to a 12 month plan if removing any of my services. I've got phone. Virgin gamer and m tv. Looking to just keep broadband as don't use phone line and don't watch any tv as use all on demand stiff now and Netflix. Any options going forward. My 30 days notice is 24th May.

Used to have the ping spike issue severely on my 200/20 gamer connection before I left for Plusnet FTTC. This manifested itself in games such as BF1 where the players would move in a "stutterstep" fashion which was really annoying. Also you had to lead your shots when gaming and caused hell with flying aeroplanes.

If you call during the day, you can request to be transferred to tier 2 support who usually have a much better ability to diagnose and correct faults. If not, try the virgin media forum team, they are far more helpful than the bog standard phone CS.

They have to link the modem's MAC address to your account so that you can use it. Prevents people from selling their modems on ebay after they have left VM.

I think the main purpose behind it is to stop illegal access to the network, when people cancel they often leave the cabling intact. It might be stop people using non-Virgin certified modems as well.

Just keep insisting "it doesn't work", let them do their diagnostics, and when they can't connect to things, they will end up sending out an engineer, and you can explain/pinpoint the problem to him. I find that when you call it though as a TV problem (rather than broadband), you always get through to a UK call centre.

My Full House contract is coming to an end shortly and I've been on the phone to Virgin to see if they can do something about the current price.. They offered me £69 to continue with the same package, and will throw in the new V6 box (the current box is the most ****** piece of hardware I've ever come across)..

Is there any point calling through to cancel? Should I expect a call with a better offer?

Im trying to pitch them against BT FTTP (which I can order), but BTs current offering for Infinity 3/4 isnt very attractive, so Im not getting much help from them to bring the price down.

Just cancel and sign up in a partners name?

We had their outbound retentions call today and they couldn't even match their current £55 full house & 200mb new customer offer.

The best he could offer was full house with 150mb for £56 per month. :D :D

I tested the connection out on a friends Virgin SH3 by playing some Titanfall 2 on the Xbox and to be honest, it was perfectly playable. No stutterstep or disconnections. It did ping spike a few times but it lasted for barely a couple of seconds before returning to normal. I'd say it occurred on average, 3-4 times in a 10 min match. I was still coming out on top of the leader board (or near the top) in the games I played.

Everyone keeps saying "if you play FPS" Is it mostly FPS games that are affected? What about, for example RTS (DOW or COH2 etc) or third person games like star wars battlefront where pin point precision isn't as intense as in an FPS games?

I realise that this issue affects all forms of Internet traffic, I just want to get a feel for how it is when playing other types of games. I'm also assuming certain titles are worse than others due to how they process network information? (going off of our two experiences with two different FPS games).

Having huge problems with my gamer package, started like 2 weeks ago. I cannot even stream anymore, it randomly just drops my connection. I'm watching my packet loss via Teamspeak and it's at the 60%-70% Out loss. Got another Engineer coming tomorrow, lets see what he says...I would leave but I have no idea what other company to go with.

Spoke to the engineer and it seems it would be a hassle to get my SH2 re registered with the service if the SH3 is rubbish so I kept the SH2. Wireless may not be its strong point but I can fix that with extenders etc
