Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Only in a handful of cases.

You seem set on VM, go for it, I hope you don't have issues.

Depends on usage scenario... thanks to the much lower ping of FTTC, I would say FTTC is better than DOCSIS in almost every situation.

The only situation DOCSIS wins is when you have to download a lot of large files.

Then you guys put me off again lol. From reviews of people testing it seems vivid gamer 200 seems great. Mostly seen ookla speed test with pings from 8 -16 range which is just as good as what i get with fttc currently. Around 16-20 ms.

How i see it is fot 45 quid i am getting a extra 100mbps on average with simar pings and same upload to what other fttc providers offer. However it seems the sh3 sucks for gaming because of the eratic latency spikes or jitter. But for people who stream or use a lot of bandwith and gaming isnt a primary it worjs fine.

I have been looking at alternatives for better latency as gaming is a primary for me. Pine media offer 80 down and 30 up for 45 quid on thier air fibre which they reckon has better latency than thier alternative FTTP which is subject to survey. I take that with a grain of salt but they told me its due to it requiring less hops back to thier newtwork.
Either way id be happy with that speed and pings shpuld be great. However if i can get 200mb speeds via VM using thier FTTC tech using cabling and offers similar latency to other fttc ISP then i feel sorta inclined to go for extra speed.

Most FTTC networks are better at everything apart from bandwidth compared to VM.
Better in which ways like i said VM seems to have good latency apart from the SH3 problem. Maybe in some circumstances fttc is better but it seems vm offer great latency from people benching thier connection. It only seems a issue in oversubscribed areas.

Things like ping will be more consistent and have less jitter, you'll have less rubber banding in games, less issues streaming video, browsing will feel faster.

I went from PlusNet 40/10 to VM 150 Mbit and PlusNet was far superior in every way apart from download speed. My area wasn't hugely congested either.

Like I said, you seem fairly set on VM and it seems their marketing has won you over, so crack on. :)

That's quite high ping for FTTC... ask your provider if they can put you on "fast path" otherwise switch to a really good ISP like Zen - my connection was very stable with low jitter on Zen and pings were 5-6ms.

Virgin pings are more likely to be in the 20-30ms range. A lot of speedtests for Virgin go back to Virgin hosted servers, which gives an unrealistic idea of pings.

If you get an SH3 it will be horrible... the jitter made trying to plan any game online infuriating... rubber banding all over the place, it was horrible so I cancelled ASAP.

Air fibre would be good if you can get it.

Allright guys ill take your advice and thanks for taking the time to respond. Who better to take advice from than the people who use it. Looks like back to pinemedia it is for me haha. Well in the next comming months. Cheers guys.

Does anyone know if Virgin Media routers keep logs of browsing activity, and if so am I able to wipe everything and disable it? I have the Super Hub 2ac if that makes any difference.

Edit: Also, is there any point to having the firewall, IP flood detection, etc. enabled?

Sounds like you got a nice free upgrade, I was just getting at the fact that they have changed their pricing recently so that "free" upgrade might have just been an upgrade to what you are already paying for.
